Normally I would agree, but if someone's ordering 10 subs, that's basically catering, and yes, you tip caterers. It's the opportunity cost: if you're making someone 10 subs and just 10 subs, you're missing out on drink/chips upsell for 5-10 other customers, also probably lowering productivity for the worker who had to make them double-time, also screwing up your topping replenishment schedule. Tip helps to cover some of those costs (because you don't have to hear whining about a raise, effort was rewarded).

Tipping is the ultimate bamboozool. Wagies resent customers and expect to make the majority of their paycheck from them directly via tips. When in reality, it is the owners/managers who refuse to pay their employees livable wages and outsource the responsibility to the customer, who is already paying the employees salary via buying from the store they work at in the first palce. You think the profits from a $10 sub go directly to the manager/owner and thats it? Cost on the sub is probably around $2 and youre making $8. Give the manager/owner $6 and the wagie $2.

After paying wagie and original material costs, thats $6 profit on every $10 sub. But we are supposed to tip the wagie an additional $2 just out of pocket because...they fulfilled their job duties of making the sub for me to begin with? Pro tip to wages. You get a large glass jar that is classier so its see through. DO NOT write "Tips" on it. Its more tactful and people will understand what it is for as they will see the money in it. Then when the shift starts you actually put money inside of it before lunch starts and customers begin rolling in.

Usually at places like Subway or small fast casual places there is only 2 or 3 people on shift unless it gets tons of traffic. Each person puts in $5 of singles and change of their own money.

For whatever reason, you get more tips from people if they think other people have been tipping all day. If the jar is just empty all the time no one puts anything in it.

Then every time there is a shift change you divide what is in the jar and start over. My buddy and I broke the tip game back in the day and was routinely earning $3-4 an hour more than we should have in a minimum wage job at the time where tips aren't expected.

That is the other thing. Always give consistent quality and service and don't expect tips regardless of the order. They will just come to you
