I think it's a bit of both. A good trip will reallign as you describe, a bad trip or a not so great trip (can happen for various reasons beyond one's control) leave me feeling off. Lately it's become apparent to me the bicameral mentality hypothesis makes a lot of sense.
When I first tripped, the most mind blowing thing I remember taking away from the experience was that I could see the walls clearly behaving and doing things that no one else could see. You could say that you perceive your own subjective rendition of what you believe the walls to be like: the walls you perceive are mental and constructed and tested against the base reality. Prior to this experience, I thought everything appeared mostly the same to everyone, much in the same way the same video game running on different consoles looks mostly the same objectively speaking. There are surprisingly few people who don't comprehend that they're perceiving their perceptions' depiction of things rather than the thing itself, and thus when people have mystical or spiritual experiences, it is far more likely they're perceiving their own mind than it is they're perceiving God. This doesn't in anyway take away or prove God or other entities exist/don't exist, it's just a comment on the nature of humanity, and the power of our subjective minds that we don't have full control over. It is as if we are all not in the same pace, consciously speaking, and there's much disagreement had about things because of different understanding. To reason about God with someone who doesn't even comprehend that their experience is entirely subjective is a waste of time in my experience, it's better to speak with children because they usually have at least some original creative thoughts vs their own interpretation of text they read or whatever.
