Half of these problems would just solve themselves if more cities significantly cut back on their zoning laws. Artificially saying "this land can only be used for single-family homes, that land can only be used for apartments" just prevents land developers from being able to solve a market need of denser housing in more desirable areas. Preface to what I'm about to say, I am a software engineer who lived in US for 24 years and chose to move to Europe as I preferred walkable cities.
The reason American cities are built the way they are has to do with culture more than many other things - yes I agree it is personally hellish, but it's less malicious than you make it out to be.
America was founded on the principles of personal property and homesteading - the reason why, in retrospect, suburbia was appealing as a concept to an early - industrial America was the same reason the revolution happened in the first place - a chunk of land you could call your own and a community with value on the family unit instead of the neighborhood.

I lived in Minneapolis pre-floyd and live just outside it in post-floyd. We actually have a somewhat decent public transportation system that I took every for years while I was in college. The lightrail is now almost unrideable as I'm pretty sure it's now one of if not the most dangerous lightrail systems in the country and they're also expanding more stations out into the suburbs as if that'll revitalize downtown and not just bring niggers/junkies/homeless out into the suburbs.

You will never, ever get pleasant walkable cities with shitlib leadership because they don't even acknowledge that the source of the issue is actually an issue.
