The premium is justifiable because of the artistic value; you are right. "Premium" is only relevant when a piece is purchased solely for its metal content; it's an insufficient metric of investment quality when it comes to other factors such as numismatics or the collectible value of a piece. Likewise, from the standpoint of someone buying solely based on low premiums, buying 1/10th oz. coins would seemly foolish since, in general, 10 1/10th oz coins would have a higher cost - due to premium - than a single 1 oz. coin; yet again, to call it foolish would neglect the utility of fractionality. While not always true, the premium you pay is most often not simply "lost" but rather you receive something which you would not recieve with a lower-premium piece (utility, collectible-value, recognizability/liquidity, etc.).

I personally would be very much reluctant to purchase any piece of collectible or numismatic value; however, this is a result of my investment philosophy from which yours may reasonably differ.

Hello bobposter, my name is big bob. I am the millionaire that showed you his house a few threads back. I only make money. I don't lose. Well that's not entirely true, I went broke once but it was over medical bills, not silver.

I'm better at math than you. I'm better at making money than you. In fact I buy and sell silver right now and turn a profit. You're right, most of these guys are overpaying, but if they hold long enough they'll profit. Or their heirs will.

Been stacking since before I was born and before my father was born, mexico is full of beans. I prefer the quiet warm suburbs of my culdesac in san dimas; only run my ac when it goes above 99, my house has great ventilation and it makes for a nice cool breeze comin in on the hot days. Front and back doors wide open 2nd floor windows above all open and windows below barely open, the heat goes up and out and the cool air stays below. Stacks probably worth more than that, I'm unironically prouder towards my stack of nickels which is reaching closer to $9k, I went to the bank and spent a few hundred. I haven't stacked silver in a few days, probably why the price went down, soon as I buy again the price will start to go up as I outbid everyone else and then the jews shoot themselves because their shorting contracts wont be fulfilled. so now this fairly fit and attractive jewess is married to a man twice her age that makes plastic models of gaming and kino stuff. Very niche, all plastic, but he makes millions. Lots of millions. Her destiny seems to have been cast in dolls and riches.

No reason people that in aggregate spend millions on models of tanks or star trek aliens or whatever couldn't spend the same on silver casts. Kino and vidya Collectibles are a small market, but very lucrative if you can cover lots of them at once.

men make money to get laid right? If you really want to get laid you'll really make a lot of money.

I can't shorten it any more than that If this seems rude and wrong you're likely not going to get rich or have anyone to pass it on to, because wealth creation and the reproductive drive are pretty much the same thing.

you don't preserve wealth

you let it flow through you. Read Dune, herbert was brilliant. You can't "preserve" wealth, it's a river. You move the river through your land and then it is "preserved."

that's the joke. Even if everyone here gets rich next week, they'll be broke again in another week. Because it's not a thing, it's a fucking process. Wealth is a dance, a constantly changing game of leverage and power. Some things are always true, like wealth is taken from other people, and he who controls the spice controls the universe. But aside from platitudes,

YOU CANNOT PRESERVE WEALTH IF YOU CANNOT CREATE WEALTH.

preserving and creating are the same act. So you won the lottery, great you'll be broke in a year.

you started a business and got rich? even better because you just learned how to "preserve" wealth. I didn't make a million dollars once. I made a million dollars over and over and over again because I don't "preserve" wealth, I create it. And once you learn to create wealth you understand why it can't be preserved
It's a fucking process, not a thing you get and sit on.

It's not that I chose that set particularly, it's just what my local numismatic shop had in stock. I just went there with usd$250 and that's what they told me I could get for that money. It's 8 coins .999 that weigh around 24.2gr to 24.5gr each. They all have the same information on one side, and a different illustration/design on the other side.
I am not a collector of sets per se, I am just stacking 1 oz ag coins here and there, and sometimes small gold coins if I can afford it.
I am pondering what approach should I take for my pms collection. If I should keep buying whatever random 1oz coins I can get for the lowest price, or if I go for collecting sets, or small gold coins, or wtf do I do.

Depends on what your goal is. Some folks here, like the windmill collectors, have a particular aesthetic they like
Others are stacking for an economic collapse, so they focus on what can be easily bartered (i.e. junk silver)
Personally, I want to leave my sons a treasure they can dig through, so I go for the sovereign stuff. I'm also thinking that if I ever do need to barter, having things that look like coins with a currency amount on them will be an advantage.

I am in my mid 30s, trying to get my life together and I am slowly entering the biz world. I want to start by getting some pms, while I learn to make money somehow. I have a few things I can do to make some bucks here and there, but I don't have anything yet that gives me a regular income, or enough for living expenses (currently I'm lucky if I can generate usd$100 sometimes).
So, while I'm getting everything set up in my life to get to the next level, my idea is to invest in silver and gold for now. It's the easiest investing option, as I don't even have a bank account to buy stocks or enter a crypto exchange, but I can just walk to a shop and get a silver coin whenever I can make some spare cash.
I want to have a stash of some coins, to have a back-up of something valuable. Another benefit of coins is that currently I don't have the purchasing power to get a house, or an apartment, or some other big ticket item, so I am able to invest in something tangible and not accumulate useless fiat.
There are some things I want to do to get my life organized, like I said, and I want to eventually branch into other investment venues than pms. I am considering entering the energy sector in the stock market, maybe to get a small bag in a couple of cryptos, and to buy some gemstones (for fun.) For that I'll need to have advanced more in my life skills, in being able to generate more income, and in getting the "logistics" set-up of having the bank account, the brokerage account, etc.
So, that's my situation basically. If you want to give me your opinion, or advice, I'd welcome it gladly

I wouldn't call it "investing". You can either speculate (try to buy low and sell high by predicting the market) which is really difficult or do the lazy thing and park some value outside the fiat system (that's what I do).
Honestly, if you are just now getting started professionally, you will be much better served by getting some skills. IDK what you want to do for a living, but putting some money to that will pay off better than PM's. Then, with skills to sell, you'll have more fiat to play/invest with.

The gemstones thing, I don't have any right now. That is just an idea, I would buy some sapphires, rubies, emeralds, for fun, put them in a chest like a pirate or a king. They are not that terribly expensive, they'd be just a fun purchase not intended for re-sale.
I am on LESS than 100 bucks a month right now, but hopefully things will improve soon.
Regarding finding a job, well, I have tried that route before and I wasn't successful. I am now starting a small thing on my own, so even if it is not an official job, I am starting to be able to generate a little income here and there.

>silver sets?
They are fancy products targeted towards those with specific interests. When new, they re priced as if they are art, not metal, so they're expensive. They usually come with fancy boxes or cases and that contributes to the expense. It seems difficult to resell as complete sets, instead you'll usually find individual pieces for sale on the likes of ebay or at your LCS. Often sold for their metal, the original buyer does not get the premium return, though the price of the metal over long periods of time may make up for that (people who buy such sets have interest in the topic, and hold onto them and it's the heirs that sell, and then the price should be closer to the metal's value). Their trading fate is very much like tableware that scrapanon hunts.
Often I will find a single piece and buy it myself for the topic. For instance, I have an interest in airplanes, and found parts of a set at a LCS. I bought the planes I was interested in (and could afford), not all of the collection they had (example pic related).

As an aside, technically Gri513/2 isn't a shill (one who surreptitiously poses as a member of a crowd to cajole the crowd into buying a product or idea by feigning enthusiasm).
He's a simple troll, his posts are bait, and life is much nicer when you put his ID into the filter. He pops up every thread and is easy to quickly spot and ignore. I often filter the IDs of those who respond too, as they contribute nothing but anger (satisfying the troll).

Fair enough, that's also what I'm doing then. I don't intend to flip coins, I just buy them and throw them in my socks drawer.

>you will be much better served by getting some skills
I am working on improving my skills. The thing is, for a long time I have focused on my skills (like learning English, doing a bit of graphic design, learning about fitness and nutrition, and others) but I never put a lot of emphasis on monetizing anything. For a long time after highschool I was unsuccessfully grinding college modules at a snail's pace, until I decided to quit to get my shit together.

Lately I have been reading books on productivity and other stuff, working on a calendar, keeping track of my finances, and stuff like that to get more organized like a grownup should. I don't see the gain in buying some fancy online course when I already have good books printed, and courses downloaded which I am going through anyways. Buying some new learning material wouldn't magically give me more time to be able to go through it, I already have resources I'm using to level up professionally when I have time left from my daily maintenance tasks.
I am doing a small family gig thing right now, and that sometimes gets me some money, but I want to do something else on the side. I'd like to hopefully work on the computer, but I am unsure of what avenue to pursue. I like design and illustration, but with everything going on with AI generated content right now, I think it might be a waste of time to go for that.
Thanks a lot for your helpful comments btw

>what approach should I take
Then there's my copypasta...

- For new generic bars, note the premiums (added charges) over spot: they go up for smaller pieces.
- Some beautiful generic items are priced comically high (Germanias, GSM special editions, e.g.). Regardless, dealers may categorize and price these as "generic" (meaning below or at spot) when buying them from you. Or your gamble might pay off if their provenance becomes highly regarded (Englehard, PAMP, antique miners/refiners, e.g.).
- When a new series of artful or themed bullion is issued, the first of the series are often missed by later collectors. They may pay high premiums to fill in their series. Caution: political or cringeworthy themes are less likely to appreciate.
- Low-mintage series are often priced very high, but may in time increase in value the most.
- Gov't-issued coins cost least during the mint run. Once the mintage stops and dealers run out of stock, their prices often jump, then rise only a bit faster than generic silver.
- Maples, Eagles, Wieners, Britannias, etc. are all nice but boring. Annual changes to overall designs become series (Somali elephants, Canadian Wildlife, Australian kookaburras or koalas, island nations' series, etc.), adding potential series appreciation.
- If you buy pieces that appeal to your sense of art, taste, and interests, you will still appreciate them even if the price or value of the PM goes nowhere. Caveat: if you go to sell, it's harder to let go of them.
- Shipping is an added premium. Many online vendors offer free shipping for purchasing a minimum amount (commonly $200). Your local coin shop has no shipping to charge.
- Vendors may charge extra for using a credit card. That might balance if your card offers cash back.

What a nice bar you got there!
Thanks for sharing your views on sets, you have helped me understand further how the market works regarding sets vs individual coins and bars.
Regarding that other guy, it's kind of sad really. Weather he is being paid per post or per (You) to fud silver, or if he is just doing it for his own entertainment. I took a glance at his posts and they are all non-stop just shit flinging short posts with no real value to them. It's kind of a pity that someone would spend their time doing that, but it's his life, to each their own.
I have seen the same on /pol/ too. That board is basically dead now because you can't find good discussion between the shills, the bots, the glowies, and the people replying to them.

If your family needs something done and pays you for it, then other people may need that service and pay for it. Advertise in your local community center, local social media, hell, knock on doors. My nephew built up a pretty good lawn maintenance company when he was in high school and through college doing that. Now he's the CFO of a major land management company making serious bank.
Your community may also have a group for business networking. I lost my job in 2020 (right before COVID!) and our local group was doing classes on interview skills, setting up a Linkedin page, resume polishing. Really helped me polish my professional look. Also, someone there would have an internship opportunity, or you can work on your sales pitch.

If you want just the best price and convenience you might be best served by online dealers that will ship the items to your doorstep, but there is also something to be said of immersing yourself into this niche and visiting the shops, talking to the merchants, and so on. r/pmsforsale might be your best bet. Keeping it in the community usually nets you some decent deals with zero tax (aside from shipping), but it's gotten busy in the last 6 months and most things get snapped up quick.

As a citizen of the cursed state of NY you'll either need to buy more than $1000 at a time to avoid state tax (gay) or I would suggest that you find a local coin shop that doesn't shaft you on premiums and start your stack with pre-64 quarters. Constitutional typically doesn't carry a tax since it's still legal money. But either way you're going to be paying out the nose.

I've got a PO box in another state that allows me to ship bullion tax free. You might also try those Amazon drop boxes just over the state line, don't know if that would work or not

Solid information there. Only thing I'd add is that sometimes boring is good. You may have trouble finding a buyer who appreciates an exotic piece and give you a good premium on it. It's more likely to find a buyer for a sovereign piece.
Of course, my focus is on accumulating metal, not trying for any numismatic premium.
