Absolutely. I fomo'd an ounce that I will pay interest on for a couple months. We are literally in the middle of bank collapses and everyone has seen "the big one" coming for twenty years. Once we go down that slippery slope America will never be the same. There will be no more free money, asset prices magically moving higher, no inflation. Shit is going to be shitty most likely because even just last year the petro dollar ended and even Saudi Arabia and Iran are now settling their differences behind America's back. American dollar hegemony makes us the beneficiary of $700BN trade deficit which is historically net-zero. So we have the most to lose. I personally want as much gold and silver in my own possession as I can afford as move ahead in these trying times. No need to go all out, but it's something I trust that I believe is undervalued in a world where most things are overvalued.

You'd need to be more specific about what you mean. In most cases, it just means that when the dust settles you at least have something when everyone else is reduced to nothing.
The basic point is that PMs maintain their value throughout time, more or less independent of the circumstances surrounding them. An ounce of gold that was held in the vault of an Egyptian Pharaoh is probably still in circulation today despite the fact that the dynasty died thousands of years ago.

Without doxxing myself too much, I went through an experience like this in another country when it's government collasped. While there's a lot of chaos on TV, for 99% of people it's business as usual. People gravitate towards order and very quickly adapt to the changing circumstances. What you're more likely to find is that people will rush to some other established currency. I hate to say it but in our case it's likely going to be Bitcoin. If not that, maybe a BRICS currency assuming it's gold backed. Hell, fucking Kohl's cash might be the best option.

I don't think it would actually be gold or silver during a transitional period. The reason is that gold and silver are good money. Bad money beats good money. People would rather trade and something that is inherently worthless: When you buy something with fiat money, you are giving away something that has no intrinsic value and you are receiving something valuable in return. Would I really hand over a gram of gold for a bag of groceries? No, I'd rather keep my gold. Plus I can't visualize every shopkeep in America weighing medals on scales. Do we even have enough scales for something like that?

I feel there are two thresholds for PMs; the first being it is a stable investment during times of financial crisis as they are hard assets you hold rather than fake numbers in an untouchable bank account and the second is in times of serious collapse you’ll see people scratching off flakes of gold for hair cuts and groceries like what is happening right now in Venezuela.

With that said and as a dude who just bought three more ounces of gold today I don’t see a drop into The Road/Mad Max world overnight and PMs may actually go down over the next few years as big gov rolls out CBDC and likely restricts or outright bans crypto. Knowing that my stash of metals is always there, will either stagnate in value or grow, and is not reliant on the participation of banks who want me eating bugs in a pod is why I’m comfy.

Time to buy food, water, and medical supplies.

I know at least a dozen people who are making purchases today with crypto. There's numerous websites where crypto is a medium of exchange. There are numerous shops and businesses in my area that accept crypto as a form of payment. In other words it is already an accepted medium of exchange. None of them would ever accept gold because they have no means of accepting it. Is it dumb? Yes. That doesn't mean it isn't happening. This is Clown World and you are far too serious.

I just don't forsee Mad Max happening outside some major natural cataclysm, like Yellowstone, Tunguska, or a Carrington event. In which case I ought to be honest with myself and you: most of the people posting here will simply be too dead to care. Either the air and water will be poisoned or you're dead in the initial onslaught. It's better to be an ounce more optimistic about the future. Stack because you want to have a nice life, not because you want to survive in some permanent Doomworld.

Society is a natural thing that exists a priori government institutions. Institutional collapse doesn't equal societal collapse because our institutions aren't society. Money is made up. When the money fails, society makes up new money. When government collapses, society makes up new government. If you look back over the course of human history, you'd have to go back to the Paleolithic era to find a "Mad Max" style place, and even then we had tribes. The thing is, people will abandon cash when it starts losing all of its purchasing power. Why would you want to hold onto it if your paychecks just disappear in 6 months or less? The market will literally be revaluing EVERYTHING. And all of the placeholder "claims" on cash will also be revaluing. Real-world scarcity will be determining price as true supply/demand reasserts itself.
I don't think people realize how much carnage is jam packed into the bond market, real estate, stocks etc. The bond market alone is twice the size of the U.S. GDP and that means there are a metric fuckton of people who expect to accrue some sort of payment/benefit who will be eating 100% losses. It's a fucking doozy to unpack, because the magnitude is impossibly large.

The bifurcation of the precious metals market is continuing every day. (It's an unprecedented kind of demand.) What are the premiums for silver eagles? What are the premiums for junk silver? Why are people still buying these products, as if in spite of the premiums? I don't need some court to fine JP Morgan for precious metals to take off. I don't need to see Jamie Dimon in handcuffs. All that needs to happen is for the fed to continuously make the absolute worst decision every chance they get, which is what they've always done and what they've promised to do. These bank bailouts are going to make inflation worse and worse, and demand for a store of value will continue to rise. Eventually, the bifurcation will get so bad, the manipulation game will cease all on its own.

There's one price for imaginary silver, and another price for physical silver. That's why we see situations where spot goes down, but dealers are sold out. Spot goes down, but the premiums "rise." There are certainly places in the world where you can do this. It seems to me these are usually low technology places with poor infrastructure. I don't live in a place like that.

In a major strife scenario you will likely still have access to basic services until the last possible moment. I think during the Seige of Sarejevo there was a beer distillery that kept brewing even as the city was getting shelled. London during the Blitz was still a functional city despite rockets landing in their backyards every day. So yes, you will likely still be making credit card purchases and using the internet in a SHTF scenario. These are all distributed networks with no single point of failure. Even if electric goes down, most businesses have a way of processing credit card payments without electricity.

Also, PM dealers can just buy their own metals while posing as buyers, easily convincing the market of the 'new norm'

They'd make more money by letting it increase than selling it and making a couple/few bucks per sale off premiums.

>It would take a certain amount of discipline and de-corruption that our current society is not capable of
This is really the main issue. The PM market could be exposed overnight if a relative few people gave a quarter of a fuck. The charade is so unbelievably fragile. But I still think it's fair to say that at this rate, with most people not giving a fuck, it's on course to be exposed anyway. Reserves are falling, industrial use is climbing, and a shitload of it is being 'lost' every year. You can print paper silver to where it's 400 paper - 1 physical, 1000, 2000, 5000, but all you're doing is pumping up a balloon and seeing how much air it can hold. So far, it's a lot of air but like any balloon it WILL pop. And the more air you pump in, the bigger the pop will be.

very true
there's no reason to think the US can keep this charade going for much longer. this country is losing its grip on being supreme leader of the world; we could even see a real WWIII break out (implying we aren't in one already with ukraine). things are NOT stable. this is the best time to be buying silver.

Yes I enjoy this part of the conversation. The practical part. I agree about industrial usage and atomic obliteration of physical silver for all sorts of projects. As I understand silver veins are generally found more towards the surface of the crust. So much of the existing supply is circulated/extinct. They did find that monster gold deposit in Uganda and I'm sure it contains plenty of silver. But in general I believe the rate of consumption will put heavy pressure on the charade

could a legalfag explain to me why countries have the need to print absurd face values on their bullion? there'd be confusion in a hypothetical SHTF situation where normies are going to go "nuh uh that silver eagle is worth a dollar it says it right there" or "that gold one says it's only worth $50." I really wish if countries HAD to do this, they'd at least give it a higher, more realistic face value. the krugerrand is the only sovereign round I can think of that doesn't have a meaningless face value assigned to it. tons of normies don't know how much silver and especially gold is really worth

The brain works like a muscle/reflex. Outside of some basic problem solving skills, your brain operates on GIGO. Garbage in garbage out. If you have your worldview surrounding things like politics, history, and economics then you are COMPLETELY at the mercy of pundits. This is why when confronted about the lolocaust, many people get upset because all they know is what they were taught in 4th grade. They have literally NOTHING in their head that helps them understand. Hence they are basically rubber stamped ideal citizens who can do nothing but repeat talking points. When FDR made personal ownership of gold bullion illegal in the 30s (done to stabilize the price of the dollar), there was still a huge underground market for gold bullion that traded at inflated rates, because people still trusted gold more than the dollar. Just because the government can make your gold illegal to own doesn't make it any less valuable.

Why would I buy internet tokens when I could 1) put some money into the 8% returns machine in case we don't get mad max 2) own my own home then acquire some rentals 3)have shinies i enjoy looking at and feeling that can't just go poof, that I can bury in the backyard, that everybody knows have value
i just can't think of a reason to own btc except for speculation.
