before the advent of stock markets banks weren't really engaged in gambling with their customers money in markets, etc. instead they kept the money safe for their customers. well now all of that is gone with the wind just like the times when it was the norm. instead of only profiting off of loans, banks now gamble with every dollar they receive. until this changes and we have responsible money controls back onto the banking sector - and/or proof of reserves in on chain avenues where tokenized assets cant be used by such degenerate bankers - we will always experience defaults in the banking sector. its as mathematically guaranteed as the sun exploding millions of years from now.

True but hard to say now because, after Dodd-Frank, some banks, including CS, have been deemed "too big to fail" well before they're in trouble. so they seem to be guaranteed to be bailed out.
Yet now it seems that "bailout" can mean two different things: bailout of the depositors but not the bank, or bailout of the bank as well.
If CS holds (on their own balance sheet, not as a custodian) a lot of debt from other big banks then if CS fails that debt goes up for auction, causing the valuation of the debt to drop, which in turn would cause stress in those other institutions. (This is how contagion works, IIUC.)

As I dive deeper, I have more doubts.

>The bank is in a lot of trouble for reasons that have nothing to do with this panic
That's true

>If you assume it will return to pre-shock level you can make some money
That was my assumption, though checking different sources I am not sure already.

From reuters https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/credit-suisses-saudi-backer-happy-with-transformation-plan-doesnt-think-extra-2023-03-15/ :
>The head of Credit Suisse Group's largest shareholder, Saudi National Bank (SNB) (1180.SE), said on Wednesday it would not buy more shares in the Swiss bank on regulatory grounds.
>"We cannot because we would go above 10%. It’s a regulatory issue," SNB chairman Ammar Al Khudairy said in an interview with Reuters. The Saudi bank holds a 9.88% stake in Credit Suisse, according to Refinitiv data.

Idk maybe it's a trap for those like me, who might want to make quite risky bet.

Those from wsj it seems that the bank will not be allowed just to die - https://www.wsj.com/articles/credit-suisse-shares-plunge-as-bank-storm-spreads-to-europe-7251349d (sry paywall)

That explains why it recovered a lot from today's bottom (in %).

I might consider taking less risk and just but a bit of another bank, which looks better.

If you're willing to dig you can get a little more info out of the financial reports than most people have.
Right now the thing to look for on the balance sheet is "securities held to maturity" vs. "Securities available for sale." The former are not marked to market while the latter are. If the company is holding a lot of long-dated bonds as "held to maturity" then those bonds are worth less than the balance sheet implies, which means that the company's net assets are actually lower than reported, if they were forced to sell in the current market.
