They're not in for the money. What's more likely is that they legitimately enjoy what they're doing or want to leave a trace of their existence behind. You can't pinpoint a single reason to explain why humans want attention, it's just a basic trait in a lot of people. There are a lot of twitch channels like that too, who keep streaming to the same audience of 10-15 people and are having a good time despite not being popular. Not everything has to be about soulless infinite growth. Youtube lost its appeal and became TV 2.0 exactly because greed replaced willingness to share as the main motivator.

I spend hours making my videos and don't get so many views (they're original content animated by me) but recently I've been making smaller videos while working on the big ones to generate a little more content every month. Now I'm in a flow and don't want to disturb that.
I just keep doing it because I love it and I don't want to give up on making them. You give up and that's it. So, it's better to just keep doing what you like to do, regardless if it doesn't get so many views. The people who do watch, I'm happy they enjoy it and come for more.

like others have said, it really just takes one or two videos to hit the algo and you might get a few thousand views, and with his backlog people will be more willing to subscribe knowing he is a consistent uploader
also stuff like this makes you better at speaking out loud and builds confidence, speaking in front of a camera and putting it up on youtube isn't that easy.
