2) they go on strike to renegotiate their contract with whoever
3) whoever pays them says 'uh no, save me government! turn these people into slaves!'
4) government passes legislation making it illegal for infrastructure workers (not just rail workers) to strike/organize
5) rail workers quit instead, say fuck this to the system. Only retarded faggots remain.
6) railways desperately hire replacements, but since only Retarded Faggots remain, the training they get is half assed at best, pencil whipped usually, strait up wrong at worst
7) queue up endless accidents and increasingly worse disasters since....who could have guessed this one?...that you need highly skilled people who know what they are doing to run your logistics

Pretty good anon. I'm one of the ones that quit, after 13 years in the industry. To be fair, the pay was pretty good, but that's due to the fact that I spent 60-90 hours a week wherever at the companies behest. Screen cap this post.

Safety has gone far, far downhill. Working conditions have degraded to a point where not even a high school degree is required to apply. When I started in mid 2000s, there were 250 people applying for 18 positions. Now they can't even fill a hiring class. All the big railroads are banded together in a coalition and are essentially leveraging the nations freight capacity against the regulating government entities and the workers to squeeze yet another billion dollars of profits out of the system. Expect worsening safety and working conditions to be attributed towards the "obvious" unreliability of people, in order to push for computer controlled trains in the future.

The companies know it will be more unsafe than the current system, so it's best to stack the deck and manufacture an artificially unsafe working environment now, so that when the computers inevitably fuck up due to the inability to use critical thought and flexible reasoning during key events, the comparative safety records directly before computer controlled trains are horrific enough that it actually looks like an upgrade.

This move to computer controlled trains will likely increase profit margins by at least 25% for all the class 1 railroads. That's a bigger jump on average than the last 25 years combined. These people would kill their own mother for even a 10% increase in a multi-million dollar industry.

Yeah, funny enough the membership were willing to take a L when compared to inflation for better quality of life. The "paid sick days" that were asked for was the union's spineless compromise to the workers decrying the new mandatory work policy that gave, on average, 1 planned day off a month. The unions wouldn't even fight that policy, a majority of coworkers (and I) believe that the union leadership is bought and paid for, doing little other than half assed measures and weak rally cries to put on the show that they are trying to fight.

You don't know shit. I'm a republican and you embody the worst kind, one that has no factual basis but runs your mouth anyway.

The railroad retirement is 100% self funded; the companies contribution is substantial but that is due to the fact that we gave up any kind of 401k matching in return. Railroad retirement is the entirety of our retirement, to the point where whatever we would get from social security is "opted out" and goes to that retirement policy instead. Those are the reasons the retirement is worth a shit, and for the record, retiremet age is 60 and nationwide statistics for all railroads is the average retiree collects 18 checks before death. Do the math on that one. For my amazing "benefits and retirement", I could multiply my check by .65 and that's what I actually received net. For my 60-90 hours a week. Keep that in mind when you spew your own bullshit.

The membership didn't ask for raises. We asked for quality of life and genuine fatigue measures. What we got was the brass ring prize for getting ass fucked in quality of life and working conditions. We were lucky to ALMOST break even with inflation over the last 6 years, but the price for that unwanted "gift" was heavy.

Capitalism as a system works when the governing bodies do their job in keeping the companies honest. When the companies grow large enough that pac funds, political donations, and lobbying efforts are big enough that they can "buy" the politicians who are supposed to keep the system honest, it all falls apart. This is an example of failure of the governing system, not of the economic one. Add on that career politicians never have to rejoin society under the conditions they create, and the negative feedback loop is destroyed that would otherwise be a check and balance for the system.

"Citizen-politicians" was the key word within the concept of "by the people, for the people"

Let me know when you are comfotable with a solo robot being your paramedic and ambulance service should you get injured. I'm sure the programmed subroutines and inbuilt learning algorithms will get it right when it's your turn

Now multiply that by 10,000 as we consider that a singular tank car, out of a train of 100 cars, can contain 25-30,000 liquid gallons of airborne toxins, or even something as simple as chlorine that will absolutely destroy the ground water table of a city for decades.

This isn't the monorail, where the system is contained to an engineered loop that has no uncalculated contact with people, vehicles, or cities where the environment is predictable. This system is intertwined with America and picks up, delivers, and handles millions of tons of every kind of product through millions of public crossings, centers of cities and towns, manufacturing facilities, the list goes on. The range of unpredictable situations and public exposure is probably greater than a factor of ten compared to a subway system or a bullet train.

Again, monorail or subway system? With no public crossings or interaction with traffic? Handling a set load weight that is consistent every time? Sure. I totally agree with you there. Americas railroad is intertwined fucking everywhere like a spider web, and the public exposure is huge. When you combine that exposure with the sheer volume of materials hauled, you get Ohio. You say easy to control, and in some ways you're right. You don't have to steer, and there is throttle modulation of forward and back, engine air brakes and car brakes, and dynamic braking of the drive motors. The crux of the problem is the severity of actions. If there is a problem a mile away, and you're now just thinking about it at track speed, you're already in oh-shit territory. Add in millions of miles of track that have to be constantly monitored and repaired, multiple already existing signaling and safety systems, some over 60 years old, just to list a few... The infrastructure and maintenance needs of the network is gargantuan. Shit goes wrong all the time. I was still seeing new shit, personally, at least twice a month after 13 years. And I'm one worker out of 10,000.. and that's just the numbers for one of the several class 1 railroads in the u.s.

The situation sounds relatively workable on paper, but the logistics of the sheer size of the network and countless systems makes it anything but predictable. On a daily basis decisions are made by every crew that take into account all of the widely varying conditions, such as grade, weather conditions, tonnage, car contents, whether liquid or solid/shifting loads, condition of the air brake system and compressor, track conditions, the list goes on. Easy to control in terms of control count? Yes. The sheer volume of factors that drastically change how the train handles, forces involved in a mile long 18,000 ton train, no. You aren't driving mom's Corolla to Walmart here.

Lol I know. I'm swallowing that fucker.

I persist because I wish people were more educated on this shit. More corporate America ruining America for profits. As an industry we've been trying to be more vocal about it for years. Changing careers was the best thing I've done in the last decade

any school in north america should suffice. but larger cities, california, and canada are great choices if you want especially high levels of institutional racism against caucasians.

Guys guys!!

This is what happens when you hypocritically endorse a banal amoral ideology to then curtail the managerial freedoms of American industrialists with excessive regulations!!!

You are absolutely fucking retarded.
Try keep 25000 tonnes rolling downhill at 60mph under control. Or how about keeping a three mile long train that's simultaneously going uphill and downhill at the same time in 3 places from ripping apart. Try running a badly build train where all the weight is on the ass end and it's constantly trying to pull itself apart.

There is no area of transportation that has more variables at any given time than running a train.
