The experience can vary widely. I went to one of the best schools in the world for it and I was put in multiple life or death situations in the wilderness in order to earn my degree, and have scars on my body for it. But as a result I have a deep set appreciation for the planet that we live on and how fucking insignificant we are in the grand scale of things.

Some schools however just give you gay ass guided tours and reddit tier educational videos and then you get a "geoscience" degree Whereas being an actual geologist requires specific field training, a formal exam, and licensing if you actually end up working in the field for a number of years. You also can almost never get hired for anything other than a bitch position where you get paid $15 / hr to work 70 hr workweeks in harsh environments doing rigorous work, unless of course you have an advanced degree and then your eligibility for actual scientific jobs increases dramatically but you still have to bend over and suck endless amounts of cock to get hired unless you know someone who can set you up.

For the last two years all I've done is build electrical panels, and not complicated one off projects, just repetitive piece work. The shop I'm at gatekeeps the one off projects to the guys who've been there for years.

I've done nothing with PLCs or mechatronics and I hardly know anything about field wiring or shit. Dont even read schematics or prints. I'm learning nothing at my job; there's no opportunity to learn, and now if I want to get a new job for higher pay I have to bullshit my way into it.
Also my degrees don't transfer anywhere to get a BA, except for a BA in sales engineering at an actually very reputable STEM centered university near me. Would have to take 60 ish credits to get that degree. Idfk what else to do my degree(s) feel useless.

Also there's very little standardization with the project I'm on. It's not LEAN at all, and management is totally fucking hands off and disconnected from the shop floor. I never really see anyone from management or get to interact with senior people who have experice. Its all just shop drones assembling on the floor while the big boys get to do engineering shit upstairs. They promised career advacement when I got hired but its non existent.

Wat do.

Any stem degree that's about science usually eats shit. There are basically no jobs for biology majors, for example. I guarantee 95% of the posters in this thread are male. Not just because of 4chan's demographics, but because if you make a jobs profile as a chick with a stupid degree you'll immediately start getting offers.

The real redpill is that everything is massively slanted against you if you're a man. The degree isn't useless, they just don't want men.

But that's fine because I'm getting a second degree in stem and a master's immediately after and that will open up doors in pretty much any country that isn't the west, which is great because at this point the historical discrimination against immigrants in countries such as Japan or Poland for example is actually less than the discrimination against men in countries like the UK.

So again, clown world.

What lead you to get a degree in incredibly retarded stuff you can learn in a library? Did you even read the degree and just laughed while reading the name? I'm genuinly honest here, not messing around. If you are genuinly curious or like the subject, you can just google to read and learn about it. Everytime I asked people what they wanted to do with their degree, they never knew what to say but "we'll see". And those who answered said working for UN or some meme organization that relies on nepotism or conections to get it without regard to your degree

I’ve been collecting books here and there on different topics, links to places to dl books and amassing a digital collection to give people copies of things I find interesting that they might want.
There was b-ok.cc but that was taken down, there was libgen, archive.org has some things still able to dl, and other websites have stuff specific to it but have to do some hunting down on different topics. Oh, and project gutenberg for old material. You can’t find everything published but there is a lot of info out there.

I love mineralogy, structural geology, etc. However, the base of maths, logic, software programs, programming, etc I built up made recalibrating to a different, yet also lucrative field possible.

when I was younger I made the mistake of dating other instructors and students. when things inevitably ended poorly because I was a 22 y/o fuckboi who didn't know what I wanted from a relationship you can only do that about 3 times until you get a reputation of being a not very good guy. so long story short don't shit where you eat.

I'm happily engaged now to someone I met outside of yoga though so that problem has been resolved. there is obviously still a lot of flirtatious gendered energy when teaching but that's fun and harmless. yoga is a very intimate practice so as a teacher you need to hold the seat of power with respect. but to answer your question I've taught thousands of classes though and I've only been "asked out" about 5 or 6 times since women don't approach men lol. most women don't go to yoga to meet men, they go there to work on themselves to become more grounded and present people

to be grounded means that you have the capacity to make decisions within at state of uncertainty. to be present means that you have the ability to give your full attention to something without being distracted by your own thoughts or feelings. these terms are often co-opted my new age woo woo fake vegan frauds no doubt, but when defined intelligently they are very powerful framings.

vinyasa yoga is not merely exercise. the difference between fitness/exercise and yoga is that fitness is a movement-based practice, whereas in yoga breath is the primary focus of consciousness and the movement is secondary. the union of these two aspects through embodiment is indeed a mystical experience, and there is tremendous power through the integration of them as one. you should go take a vinyasa yoga class to see what I'm talking about

In terms of marketing, email blasts (Mailchimp or Constant Contact), Facebook marketing, various event posting websites, and print (brochures, flyers, A-Frame signs). SEO is always good, especially if you're familiar with any website builder like Wordpress or Wix.
>no one is hiring people with no experience
Try going out to local spots and offer to help with their website and SEO for an hourly rate. Look for brick & mortar places that don't need constant updates. Other than that, you can always lie (like 3/4ths of the workplace does on their resume). If you want the big bucks, you can segue into front-end development, but that's a bigger investment of time and money.

used to be college was so cheap and rare to see completed that people with bullshit degrees did alright.

my granddad didn't even go to college and retired as a regional manager selling hardware c. 1959-2003

college is for specific credentials that you can't learn sufficiently on your own and need that "proof" to show the world. I can teach my self physics, but nobody hires "self-taught" physicists anymore. you need that credential to show the work.

going by your logic, why go to school to become a doctor, lawyer, architect, if can you find all of the information that you'll need at the library? hell, you can just google everything along the way.

it's a completely asinine and narrow way of viewing things because other than the connections and networks formed at these institutions, they offer a sense of security and assurance that their insight into the field is just and reasonably sound. they also provide accreditation, something the lay person or HR simply could not assess with confidence, without. obviously autodidacts exist and more power to those who can put together a curriculum and long term goal in mind without schooling (there was a kid who was able to perform orthodontics reconstruction of teeth with nothing but knowledge attain from google, not sure what his mouthpiece looks like at the moment but it was definitely a site to see) but most people would get lost in the vast amount of information that is out there and growing at an exponential rate.

if school isn't for you, that's fine. own up to it, go to your vocational center or bootcamp and get your money's worth. but for most, aside from their political views, universities provides a utility that is unmatched to what you could gain at a local library or google.

exactly. gone are the days when you could coast by with no formal education or even general degrees. Pretty soon, BS in CompSci or programming (referring to autodidacts and bootcampers) will not suffice. the degrees and the institutions are not to blame however. businesses are taking a chance on their candidates, and the odds are looking much better for a candidate with a specialized skillset than a candidate with an understanding of the basics but nothing else (not saying you are worthless, it's just that the chances of success are greater with a more refined specialist) as such, degree holder is entirely at fault for not assessing direction the market is heading into.

Nobody actually cares if the degree is a B.A,, a B.B.A., a B.S., or anything else. The core curriculum is exactly the same in any case. Economics is just a hit-or-miss field. CompITA is just IT but for people who didn't want to get into degrees, some IT/Cybersec jobs ask for those and they'd certainly help if you don't wanna spend another x year/s on university spending a lot more than 3 digits.
CompITA stuff also has a lot of resources you can pirate online so you'll likely only have to pay for the exams. Check out CompITA certs in your Indeed or other job sites and see if it's worth the trouble.
Also I'm kinda waiting for a reply on an IT job I applied for and the application progress was much more simpler and reasonable than whatever other computer related jobs ask for (like waiting 5 months and going through 8 steps of technical, personality, etc for coding jobs). I think just about anyone can get an IT job but you should be looking out for the ones that constantly help you improve and learn than mind numbing help desk or repair/maintenance stuff.

I think it's moreso because of the golden rabbit hole: you start at some low paying job thinking that it's temporary. Soon after, you move up a bit in position and rank with a slight bump in pay. It gets to a point where in the back of your mind, you know that the job is shit but you can't exactly leave it for some other entry position because that often comes with a huge cut in wages earned and seniority. So, people who aren't motivated enough feel like they are trapped because while the pay isn't great by any means, you're still able to get paid and could possibly get promoted to assistant manager sometime in the future.

This. This right here.
> It was a different time, boomer parents and family push you to follow what interests you.
I would like to change "what interests you" to "go to the 'best' college based on meme rankings." Boomer parents went through some ridiculous shit from their parents and society at the time like being beaten in school by the teachers and their parents telling them they couldn't attend college because they had to work the metaphoric family farm during which they were treated like shit and paid even less. Basically child labor. Because the World War 2 generation was treated even crazier.

So to Boomer parents sending you to college edified them as parents - they "did right" by their children because "they knew best." Well surprise they just traumatized their kids (it's called generational trauma) in a different way by memeing them into debt. Boomers didn't keep up with the times and didn't understand debt; hell people today STILL don't understand debt even though debt runs their lives. Financial literacy to Boomers was "knowing how to balance the check book" lulz. So to Boomer parents not going to college was tantamount to being a dead beat piece of shit who worked on motorcycles, which was a meme job to them.
>2008
I was in meme college for meme degrees in 2008, 2009, and 2010. I saw first hand how the job market completely and permanently changed. It went from "which school did you go to" and "what GPA did you achieve" to needing to know the entire job through and through and prove it on paper before they would hire you. "On the job training" disappeared in corporate America because there was a sea of humanity applying for every open job that was left after the Armageddon. We're talking 300 applicants for every entry level position. Pair that with soul crushing levels of debt taken on by 18 year olds and recommended by *everyone in society* from parents to schools to guidance counselors... and you have today's Student Loan Crisis.

Honestly, there's such a big difference between each field within the big categories and engineering work is so different to uni that it doesn't really matter. In general I've lived my life under the rule that it's good to go into fields with barriers to entry that are as high as possible, so by that reasoning you should either go into chemical or find an early specialty in mechanical. But personally out of those two options I would have gone with mechanical, but then I would have (and did) choose electrical over it.

>> No.53205991

> it's good to go into fields with barriers to entry that are as high as possible
What’s the reason for this?

My first pick was mechanical engineering because you can get into any engineering jobs with the degree but I found out that engineers could work within the medical industry so I considered doing chemical engineering as they’re closely related to the medical field but are flexible enough to where can get jobs in other industries.

>What’s the reason for this?
The harder it is to get into something the fewer people there are doing it. Less competition means higher pay and better career prospects. For example the absolute worst thing you could do is to try and be a CAD designer for instance, because then you're competing against every pajeet with a fake degree.
>you can get into any engineering jobs with the degree
I don't know where you heard that, but it's not true. You'll only be able to get jobs in fields you're qualified for. Once you have experience in something you can move around a bit, but people still expect it to be broadly in your "type" of engineering. It's one of the ways I lucked out by studying mechatronics, because people think I'm qualified as a mechanical engineer when really most of what I did was electrical.
>closely related to the medical field
Not really? I mean if you want to get into medical devices your best bet would be a specific biomedical engineering degree, probably followed by electrical. I doubt you would have much luck getting in with a chemical engineering degree unless you were looking more at pharmaceutical manufacturing. This is also where I plug systems engineering, because there's quite a bit of it in medical devices and they tend to do it pretty well.
It's worth mentioning that you generally can move between different industries, but it can be a bit hard to move between different specialties within those industries.

It's not a great degree for finding work, but you get the occasional manager who values a history degree, in all sorts of fields. At least according to my friend's boss, his history degree is what put him above the rest when he applied to be a sommelier, and heard similar stories from others too. As for a academia, can't recommend the path. If you genuinely want to devote your life to it, it's possible to build a really cushy situation, but it's gonna suck for years until you get a decent position, you are gonna have to deal with the 7th circle of hell of office politics, jump through a million hoops just to stay in the game, and need to teach whether you want to or not. From what I've seen from friends and teachers I am/was close to, only those who have a genuine passion for history and are willing to work hard make it.
On the other hand, going the teaching route (below uni level) is great if you have an affinity for it, actually like doing it and have a talent for dealing with the bullshit parts of it, like regulatory hoops and stupid parents. The first few years are difficult, but it gets easier. After a few years I got a job at a nice private school and love it here. I genuinely like 80% of my job and by now I'm really good at painlessly dealing with the other 20%.

But picking mechanical engineering would mean I would have to compete with a lot of other people as it’s the most popular engineering degree.

>I mean if you want to get into medical devices your best bet would be a specific biomedical engineering degree
Yeah I’m currently doing a transfer progress right now and biomedical engineering is grouped into chemical engineering so I chose this route then I could think more about which one I want to hone in as I transfer. The down about biomedical engineering is I heard that it’s incredibly tough but I’ve heard the same thing about chemical engineering.

I had no real idea what engineers did, but I thought it involved designing things when for most people it doesn't.

I have a meme degree in music, and you're absolutely right, everything I learnt there I could have read in books. People go to university for 'the university experience' i.e. that's where all their friends and the cool young people are going. They go there to also meet a partner. There's not much point in going to university for a purely academic subject unless you want the accreditation. Sure, you can't learn to become a neurosurgeon from just reading books, you need practice. But 'book' subjects are worthless imo. Even when it comes to my field which is music, the greatest composers (Bach, Beethoven, Mozart) never went to a music school, they learned from private tutors and solitary practice. >There is literally only one discipline of engineering that will lead you to a worthwhile life and career. And that is software
Preach. Did mechanical, got a retarded manufacturing job and could not escape to a more interesting field, got lucky and pivoted to IT sales shit.
Now I'm 27 and can't afford a CS degree.

I thought I replied to this already. Basically I didn't really know what I wanted to study but I had to declare a major by end of my sophomore year. In high school I wanted to major in polysci, but after taking an AP government course senior year I decided not to because I thought the way our gov't functioned was kind of retarded. But I got into college, the advising was shit, and I needed some elective courses so I ended up taking polysci courses that interested me. I did very well in all of those classes and actually enjoyed the subject matter.

Yes it's all basically reading comprehension and analysis but I was fine with that. I thought paired with a foreign language it would be a decent pick. Plus back then, there was a big meme that "university degree just proves you can learn and follow instructions, which is what corporations want".

I genuinely thought that if I didn't get a government job or think tank job, that I could get some generic marketing job or whatever for 60k right out of college. That's basically what all my professors told me as well, you'd ask about career prospects and they'd say, "well, um I got my bachelor's and master's in political science and look at me, I have a good job at the university".

All in all I just feel like my university was shitty and the advising was sub-par. I know this sounds retarded but I wish my advisors would have emphasized the absolute necessity of having an internship or outright job in your field before graduating. I participated in many on-campus extra-curriculars, and thought that would make up for not having an internship. I was on the radio station, student newspaper, and other cultural clubs. But unfortunately all of that means jack shit and you need internships in your chosen field otherwise graduating with a BA is really no different than high school diploma
