I could buy a house but the trade premise of $100k out of pocket just to spend more on a mortgage than I currently do on rent, all of that going to interest for like the first 20 years, all while my house makes me no fucking money seems very retarded.
If home prices normalize and markets are flat thus neutralizing the opportunity cost factor then it’s more a considerable trade, as it stands right now though, nah.

accounting IRL is much different than accounting in the classroom. it's still gay and boring but it's not unbearable. also consider that most finance jobs within your reach are going to be corporate FP&A type jobs. you can get those types of jobs with an accounting degree (in fact i do some forecasting and variance analysis as an accountant.) but on the other hand, someone with a finance degree can't do accounting.

26 years old.

Spent the last six months homeless. Now living in my parents garage while I try to build a business for myself and work part time as a jeweler +several side hustles. I don't have enough money to live on and often worry about having to live out on the streets again.

That said I don't have any debt. It's a weird age to be because there's a massive difference in the quality of life between people in my age group, but I can't really respect their "accomplishments". I've met many people my age who have just graduated college debt free, and bought their first house, and are working in tech and finance, all thanks to mommy and daddy, but it's not like they accomplished any of it on their own. Most of the people I grew up with are dead or doing life in prison, so that's the polar opposite side. It seems that most in my generation are graduating university with a crapload of debt and slotting themselves into a comfortable yippie existence. They live more glamorous loves for sure, working for a famous company and going out on the weekends to trendy clubs or bars, and they are obviously more respected than most, but objectively speaking their net worth is perpetually in the negative numbers and the socio-economic prestige they receive has been bought at the cost of their economic freedom.

I refuse to compare myself with someone who's daddy bought them a house, or who owes tens of thousands of dollars to the bank, no matter how superficially better their life is.

debt isn't the enemy, debt allows you to increase your income and assets at a faster rate than paying for everything in cash

going into debt for a truck allows you to earn money hauling furniture and appliances around town, same thing for lawnmowers. housing debt is good - you can rent the house out for additional income, and in the vast majority of cases it's cheaper to buy than to rent.

in 2017 i was maxing out CCs and buying BTC on coinbase and got a 10x, then the banks decided they didn't like that and they closed that loophole

35, small business one man show for over a decade, business is pretty slow these days buy I'm changing that. I want to hire someone part time soon. If I can get the business to support it. Amassed 825k in stocks, crypto, cash at this point. In the year 2020 I was at around 200k in investments/cash. 825k doesn't feel like enough somehow. I'm in shock about that. I fear for how I would feel if 2021 wasn't so good to me. If I'm this worried about money now, how much worse would I be if it didn't happen for me? I did the math though, and 825k means I can likely invest 700k comfortably while using the rest for emergency fund and some upcoming expenses and business funds. 700k invested means that I can be financially independent in maybe 5 years, to provide for my own expenses. But when I factor in my family I'll have to stay invested for closer to 12-13 years. Which means I have to work for that much longer. My wife makes good money though, way better than me. But she's starting to spend it pretty fast, especially considering everything is just getting absurd with costs. Why do I not feel like I won the game? Maybe because I haven't yet. But I feel like I should be way more relaxed at this point. Oh forgot to mention, I own a home bough about 10 years ago and owe under 150k on it. So things could be so much worse for me.

There are three types: ex-military with all expense paid, third worlders on full rides, and Joe average American who's parents subsidize their education.

First and second kind are easy to spot, and often the thirdies still end up owing tens of thousands in debt (while working nearly full time to finance education).

There are lots of Joe Average Americans who claim they pulled themselves up by the bootstraps and paid off their college debt working fifteen hours a week on top of their education, but these crackers are all liars. Every time, without fail, when someone brings up a story like this they're leaving out the part where there parents paid their rent for four+ years.

It's simply not realistic to believe that somebody is earning the 20-40k a year needed for school fees/living expenses ON TOP of attending school full time. Nobody is consistently working 80 hours a week for four years while earning median US wages without a diploma, and anyone claiming otherwise is either lying to you or lying to themselves
