Okay, so it's leaf dollars and not real dollars but 2 mill to a fucking Uber driver? Somebody was lying on their application and somebody did zero checks.
This happened a lot in the UK in 2007 and a lot of people went to prison for fraudulent applications which seemed really unfair because the banks knew everyone was lying and didn't do any checks. They came up with this little con where you did a 'self cert' mortgage application basically declaring the information you gave was true and the banks took that at face value. They took the homes and sent to you to prison if you didn't pay. Then they invented the next con of 'interest only' teaser mortgages allowing you to absolutely max your income based on only paying the interest and no capital. That went south a few years later when people realised they couldn't refinance on interest only and couldn't afford to service the loan plus interest so the banks either took the house or put them on a SVR (standard variable rate) which tripled and quadrupled repayments.
Banks are fucking evil.
