It depends on whether or not you think there will be a stable, functioning society left by the time you retire.

I think that even if you're a bit of a conspiracy theorist, you'd be a fool not to contribute some money to these tax-advantaged accounts.

Moreover, all the people saying not to contribute are telling on themselves how poor they are. You're only allowed to contribute $20k a year to a 401k anyway, so it isn't as if anyone worth a lick can sink their entire net worth into it anyway.

>> No.52848064

You're limited in your investments in a 401k because of how powerful it is. Generally, if a financial investment is limited by the government, then it's because it would be too good otherwise.

Bingo. That's why I like to do some money in a mix of 401k/Roth/HSA/I-Bonds. I still have other holdings outside of those

Apocalypse fags are always wrong. At any point in World history if you asked yourself "Is now the time to enter the market?" you would have to conclude no because it always looks like Apocalypse is imminent.

They are becoming one. If you think about the whole structure of when it was started AND forced minimum disbursements. So since 1980 people started pumping money into the stock market with no intention of withdrawing until retirement age. The particular stock driver was in grow only mode from then until now. Now we have boomers withdrawing voluntarily and involuntarily (forced minimum disbursement). Contributing to 401k now is buying their bags while there is selling that didn’t exist while they were contributing. Basically what was a growth driver is now a sell driver, we’ll tread water while we rotate in and they rotate out

Show me the chart with only the companies from 1900 pls.

Also using any index to make a point with a chart that starts before around 1980-2000 is retarded. Index funds were invented in the 70's and weren't popularized until later.

The market and the world adapts and changes. Even if the government totally implodes society won't because the government doesn't create society. Similarly, even if the financial system implodes that doesn't mean that we're all going to be poor because that's not where wealth comes from. It's hard to explain but you'll know what I mean when you see it yourself.
My only advice to people is to buy things that will last your entire life. Focus on function over fashion. Consume less, save more. Understand that you're solely responsible for saving yourself. Feel the fear but do things anyway. Live near the people you love. That's about all I can advise regarding building wealth or being happy in the long run.

So it was illegal for a regular investor to buy a broad diversity of stocks? Help me understand how a regular person who owns a wide variety of stocks and bonds in various sectors---as anyone would have been advised for centuries now---wouldn't ultimately have a similar outcome? Oh right you can't because you're just another doomfag who only focuses on failure and sadness and being miserable. Fuck all the way off. Then keep fucking off some more.

This. Most companies match 50% up to the first 10k so its basically a 50% return in your first year of investing anyway. Plus you get tax savings on anything you contribute; I max out every year.

I've been investing in 401k through work for 20 years. Just a basic DCA into a FID 500 Index (pretty low fees) and I'm already at $900k even through this past crash shitstorm.

You're a brainlet to not use a 401k if your company offers IMO.

Bingo. It's important to diversify and to not only have a 401k but with matching you'd be silly to not throw some money into it. Also you can work with your company if they shit 401k options with high fees, from my experience the dumb HR bimbo has no idea what she's doing and is more than willing to receive help on it. She can brag to her boss how she got better options and you can reap the rewards of it.

The stock market isn't going anywhere, as long as the rich can continue to make money on it, us bottomfeeders can continue to milk it for some security. It shouldn't be the only thing you're relying on for retirement though
