It actually is basically a scam. The only ways in which college is not a scam is if you study medicine, business, finance, or computer science and SOME STEM fields. Everything else is a scam. I majored in liberal arts and a foreign language. I graduated from college in 2013. I've been working full time ever since. Only in the year 2022 did I finally get a job that pays more than $20 per hour. I should take home about $43.5k before taxes.

My good friend who did drugs all through high school and frequently skipped classes is a truck driver who hauls fuel and he makes about 120k per year. In comparison to him, I was scammed. I'm only lucky in that my parents paid for my education. If I had taken out loans and paid 100k-200k for college I'd probably be paying them back for the rest of my life.

College is absolutely a scam if you don't have someone else paying for it. It wasn't always that way. Getting an education is generally good, but it just doesn't lead to good economic outcomes anymore. You don't go to an Ivy to be "an educated and productive member of society", you do it to be the best in your field. The funnels into academia, medicine, and business/finance simply do not exist at any other universities on the planet, even "public Ivies". Getting an MBA, for example, from any of these schools can get you an $800k/yr+ VP position at any Fortune 500 company before you reach 30, which in turn sets you up for positions of actual power in board rooms or C-suite once you hit the middle of your career.
I will say that a Bachelor's degree from an Ivy, by itself, is a little overrated though. If you don't plan on getting an advanced degree, then I agree that you'd be better off going to a state school.
