It's not just about DRS, it's about the empty space on the ComputerShared circle. Let's call this "shares available to close shorts" or "SACS".

SACS = Shares Outstanding - Insiders - Stagnant - DRS - Institutions - ETFs - Mutual Funds

If public Short Interest is greater than SACS, it becomes mathematically impossible for shorts to close even by public information (ignoring swaps, puts, etc.) and everyone FOMOs back in at light speed.

Sure, but why would they? They're already lending shares to hedgies and farming fat lending fees from it. That's half the reason hedgies are in such deep doodoo now, they can't buy more shares from institutions to close because institutions are already lending out their maximum number of shares. The bigger problem is ETFs, since you can "create" an ETF basket with nothing but cash representing "fair market value" for the underlying stocks, and then you can short those newly created ETFs.
