Protip: The artists in the middle ages producing this stuff weren't intrinsically less capable than modern artists; they simply hadn't been exposed to competent art so they never learned to do it. Had you shown those artists >>52382444, art would have rapidly advanced several centuries as they internalised what was possible. No artist learns without exposure to other people's art, not a single one. They all do the same thing AI is now doing.

You're right about the input data being a limiting factor. AI image generation right now is innately worse than a professional artist unless you choose to make prompts ONLY for very highly tagged stuff like faces. And even then it's prone to fucking it up. The dataset of SD is plagued with art made by industry professionals who were either trying to be creative or were pushing product, leaving subtle errors in their images, which in itself is reasonable but crippling as data for an AI where the goal is either peak human or superhuman all of the time.

There's a strong argument this is what the brain is also doing at its core. At any rate, there's no reason to believe AI can't fully capture the brain's learning approach with further research. Not there yet, but may be soon. Unless you believe the brain is made of quantum magic or something.
