Serious question, are you guys going to stake your entire stacks? I've never used Defi or even sent a single token before. I moved it from the exchange to cold storage and that was that. I don't want to lose almost 20k link because I don't understand how gas works or if I send it to the wrong address, or even just because the protocol fails.

my view is to put the trial run in AAVE: If more link = more payouts, the borrow rate should track close enough to the staking rate. Figure putting it in there would be safer than putting it some unproven staking contract, at least to start.

If not: They don't have to actually buy the tickets at retail price. If they are selling tickets themselves, they can just stop selling them. If they outsourced the ticket sales to a third party they could have set up an internal 100% discount code to buy the remaining tickets at $0. In both cases the cost involved is the sunk cost of having the whole stack of tickets designed/issued/printed/whatever in the first place.
