How do you get a negative net worth if you are poor? Who gave you the money to borrow?

You need at least $1,000,000,000 to be middle class in 2022 America

If you want to be rich in relative terms, just look at the net worth you need to be in the 1% of your country.

If you want to be rich subjectively, then it's about having enough capital to live what you would consider an acceptable life off of it (not a perfect life, otherwise that number will be limitless).
The answer on how much capital you will need depends on how expensive your "acceptable life" is.

Otherwise you are still working class.

its ok if you have different definitions for rich. mine is to be able to sustain a family of 4 indefinitely without work and safety from a significant drawdown.

4% safe withdrawal rate on 10m is 400k, but "safe" withdrawal is stagnation. Imo if you are not growing you are not safe. So for me 2% is safe withdrawal rate which is 200k per years aka 50k per person. In the event of a 50% drawdown it's 100k which is still enough to support family of 4

income is all that matters. if you have mid 6 figure student loans and a mortgage and a car loan BUT you have a 6 fig stable salary you still live better than millionaire neets who spend 15k / year and live in constant fear of when crypto finally collapses for good

I'll tell you what this is OP. They are scared. They are trying to make everyone feel in the same boat. When the reality is that we are not.
"Ha, see this poorfags, it's not so bad! People who make 1m are also at the bottom rung!"

The noose is tightening and the top 10% can taste the blood on their tongue. Poor people want to murder every rich person on earth and it's only a matter of time before the boogaloo begins.

The middle class is melting away since more than 3 decades now.
The dynamic is a class of super rich, an upper-middle class of elite workers (executives, doctors, engineers, lawyers, etc...) and the rest are working poors.
