A BS in Chemical can start you way higher but it means dying of cancer by 65 due to all the low level exposures in a plant. The average pay for a postdoc Chemical engineer at national labs is around 70k. Sure, that's a starting job, but 65-70k for a man in his late 20s with a stay at home wife raising their first kid or two doesn't go that far. Intel and the like will offer you 100k+ to do defect metrology if you have a PhD, but you'll want to kill yourself, AND you have to live in the outskirts of Portland.

And teaching masters are fucking jokes to get. Rank I and II masters can be done fucking online at this point.
