Absolute maximum for a car looks like 810 a month. If paid off, if I buy it new with no down payment like a nigger it goes to 1260 a month. Until payed off.

In reality I had a substantial down payment payment so my car payment is 100 dollars a month, I still pay gas, haven't broken down or needed new tires in 2 years, can find new tires and repair for prices that aren't meant to scam ignorant single mothers. Then I give the car a freshwater rinse with a hose only after snowstorms. Thing is 8 years old at this point.

Certain cars cost well over $1k/m but not economy cars. If you buy outright in cash, only buy liability insurance, pay insurance in full, and don't have a mechanic that rips you off, so you're getting only preventative maintenance that is needed to reduce cost of repairs in the future, You can easily get the total cost for a car to be less than $100/m, depending on how much you drive, if you commute then gas and repairs are going to cost more, but in a modern city a train/bus pass is going to cost over a $100/m anyway, and that is heavily subsidized as well.

I know all the rules of the road, I've practiced with a friend for a year on and off and I know how to drive a car. On principal, I refuse to pay a 1000$ de-facto tax to learn how to drive, along with all the additional licensing fees, so that maybe in a year I can get the license. I want the license now. Last I check, granted it was back in July, but Foed had over 40k vehicles sitting in lots waiting on various chips and electrical sub-assembly units. Chrysler has forgone many of them with the promise to install them at a later date, and it looks like GM is considering the same.

This is compounded by the fact that major automakers started to roll back production goals in 2019 because they anticipated having a surplus of lease vehicles being returned. So going into 2020 inventories were already very low, and those expected lease returns didn't materialize.

None of this touches on the additional problems within the industry, like steel shortages or inability to get employees. My shop alone has been 60-70% understaffed since May 2020.
