WHAT IS THE POINT OF A STOP-LIMIT ORDER? I can't fucking understand why it would be preferential over a regular limit order.

Why would you want to activate an order ONLY when it reaches a certain price? How is doing that ANY better than just making a regular order for the price you want to buy/sell at?

Stop loss

>> No.5116466

its a normal stop loss that just places a limit instead of a market order. How is that so hard to grasp?

>> No.5116483

>>5116435
The stop is so that you stop losing money in whatever direction you dont want it to go.

The limit is, it will set a limit after the stop is activated so that say, Bitcoin is crashing and you stop it at 16000. When that activates you have 16000 dollars and a limit is set at 10,000, you will now buy bitcoin when it reaches 10,000 dollars if it continues to crash.

But how is that advantageous over a regular limit sell order?? Why not just do a regular limit sell order for 10,000?

Right so basically it's for TA guys. Now that I can understand, even though I don't think TA works with crypto.

If the current price is 15000 and I put a normal limit sell order for 10000 that order will go through right away because there will be buy orders above 10000. If it’s a stop limit then the order only gets placed once the price hits 10000 so it won’t go through right away

Honestly I can just hardly see a scenario where using a stop is preferential. Say BTC is 10k, I wanna buy at 8k. Why not just put a regular limit buy order for 8k? What is the point of adding an intermediary stop at 9k?

a stop loss is not a buy order m8. if you think that a coin you bought is going to uptrend, but you're not confident in it. set a stop loss so that you automatically sell if the coin drops a certain % or reaches a certain price. That way, if it continues up, you hold the coin, but if the price starts to drop, you sell before you lose too much

Conditional buy orders only make sense if you want to buy at a breakout and wouldn't want to buy otherwise. Conditional sell order is to stop losses obv

if you do not know the great security a stop limit offers (for stop loss, of course), then you should just leave crypto markets.

How am i supposed to figure out the top to set a stop-loss

For instance, i expect btc to break 20k in the next few days. My problem is will the top by 22k? 25k? 30k? 50k?

Im scared of stoploss because i don't see it any different than trying to time the top by a market sell. I'm guessing this is where I'll have to do some meme lines?

Well then that ultimately brings me back to my point, in my mind I wouldn't see any difference in arbitrarily picking a point.

The only thing i will say is setting a stoploss might make me less prone to emotion trading

I don't really know what I'm doing but I used it yesterday like this:

OMG was going up rapidly but I had not researched the coin. So I bought in and set and removed stop-loss at 10% below the current value while it was rising. I got out with 15% gains a little below the top.

Brainlet here, is this how a stop-limit works?

Coin trading at 200 sats after a moon mission.
sell stop at 180, limit at 170 means that if it goes below 180 my sell starts, and will sell if it hits 170, but only then? What happens if the STOP is initiated but the price goes back above 180?

>> No.5117561

It places the sell order but the order is never filled.

That is the proper use. However, it's not as useful with Crypto since prices are incredibly volatiles.

There are many shitcoins that dump 50% in an hour and then reach new ATH an hour later. It's dangerous to use stop loss for a coin that you want to stay invested in.

Yeah it's dangerous to trade shitcoins at all. I didn't advocate it, I just explained it, brainlet.
