Google how diamonds are classified by size, clarity, cut and other parameters and how they affect price. Size is not the only important one to consider, a lot of sellers will try to sell you a larger low quality stone, even though it will look subpar. It's always better to buy in the optimal price-quality range, not the best and not the worst, but a bit better than average.

No. Blue Nile is a scam, and most diamonds that you should look to buy are synthetic diamonds. They are real, man-made diamonds that come from a lab with the desired carat, cut, color, and clarity which are your 4 C's of diamonds. It will save you a ton of cash and are legitimately real diamonds. HOWEVER: make sure that any diamond you buy has a GIA certification. Any other is, quite frankly, a scam.

I used a company called "forever artisans" to make a custom engagement ring. My wife has really understated taste in jewelry, and I couldn't find anything like what she wanted (a band of metal with gems recessed into it until they were level with the surface). Basically, I made a terrible paint drawing, wrote up a description, and found some examples online that had elements we wanted, and sent it into them. Then they translated it into a CAD design, got my approval, and had it done in a few months. $2000 and change got her a heavy little piece of platinum with orange sapphires.

All their stones are lab made, so your biggest cost is going to be based on the metal and their labor. I went for platinum because she doesn't wear yellow gold, b right now platinum is trading at like half the price of gold, so you may be able to save a bit there as well.

I work in the jewelry industry ill red pill you..

Buy a lab made diamond or even a moissanite.
A lab diamond is chemically indistinguishable from a natural diamond, lab diamonds have much less impurities.
The same diamond that costs 20k natural is 5k lab.
Moissanite is also popular, it actually shines better then diamonds 2.65 refractive index vs 2.5, and moissanite is very similar in hardness 9.5 mohs vs 10 mohs for diamonds.

There are actually suckers who pay 200% more for a lower quality diamond... It gets even worse when they they buy natural SI diamonds in poor color and SI (slight inclusions) quality for 10k when a much better looking lab made VS diamond with D color costs 3k.
Resale value for diamonds is also horrible, its common for wives to freak out when the pawn shop only offers them 200-500 for the wedding ring they got for 5000
I really want to emphasize this for my /biz/ bros.

Diamonds have a shady history with predatory marketing "oh but you really love her dont you anon"?
A women literally cannot tell the difference between a 10000$ diamond vs a 100$ moissanite, they only care about thinking that youre willing to spend that much money on them.
Indians know whats up with this, its objectively far better to buy her 10000 worth of gold then a shiny diamond which holds little value.

For the longest time Jews had a monopoly on he diamond industry, recently that has been changing with indians and chinese. Now india is a big provider because they have tons of labor to cut the gems. And the Chinese are running the game when it comes to lab grown, these groups are btfoing the traditional de beers natural diamond jews monopoly gatekeeping.

No they don't, and most rings are actually around $3500-$5000. Been doing this for two decades. The three months salary idea is a marketing myth used to push people to buy higher and spend more on a single purchase because, let's face it, you're not going to go buy a SECOND $5000 engagement or wedding ring unless you have oodles of cash or have really bad relationship skills. I bought my wife a D color, VVS1 2.5 carat princess cut lab diamond for $6500 which would have cost $30k+ at Tiffany's. There is zero structural and chemical difference difference and its overall composition puts it within 2.3% of all diamonds to have such qualities. Get a man made diamond. They are exactly the same thing and 100% indistinguishable, your girlfriend can get a bigger diamond or a higher quality than one dug out of the ground by some nigger in Africa for the same price.
The only way to tell a man made diamond apart from a natural dug out of the ground one is by looking at the lattice structure under a microscope and seeing if it has been registered in some magical diamond database.

Book in a session with a proper jeweler. Then talk to them to take you through what to look for in a diamond. Ask what they can offer for that budget, then have a look around online.
Also find out how much they will charge to just set your own diamond in a band.

You would need to have. Lot of diamond dealer friends to have any sort of liquidity. Nobody is gonna wanna buy some random guys diamond parcel.

In general natural colored diamonds such as pink or yellow have gone up over time in the last 20 years, they are much scarcer and so they perform more like rare art or luxury watches, small supply. They are also much harder to sell because only some mega richfag would be in the market for that.

Objectively natural rubies are the rarest gemstone, they are actually rarer then diamonds, but as i said previously lab made gems are really turning the game upside down recently

If you guys want another red pill on jewelry, especially gold; buying new retail is a scam.
Ita typical for retailers to sell gold chains for 300% over spot brand new.
The thing about gold is that it never changes or degrades so a "used" chain means fuck all. If you are patient you can buy the same chain for spot or very close, and if it has any scratches it can easily be polished and will look brand new.
That way you let the original buyer take the financial hit and you get it for spot price, then you can always resell it for exactly what you paid for it.
If you buy new you will aitomatically lose 50% which you will never get back.
Although its more typical that jewelry will sell for 20-30% over spot since there is more labour required to create it, nice popular pieces such as cuban link chains will be harder to find for apot because they are in high demand. But yeah going to a retail jewelry store will always get you ripped off.
Another thing you can do is go to a pawn shop and buy their scrap gold, usually they will have some jewelry which will require some repair, they are lazy to fix it so that stuff is going to be sent to a refiner and they will get 99.5% of the spot price so they have no problem selling it to you for spot. Then you can just go get it repaired which is pretty cheap if its a small problem. Way cheaper then retail "new"
Really if you think about it there is no sixh thing as "new" or "used" gold, its been recycled and remelted for centuries

Ebay, you can even find stuff for under spot sometimes. Some people are sketched out but gold is really easy to authenticate. If you buy from accounts that sell a lot of jewelry and have a lot of feedback you wont run into any trouble. There are a lot of pawn shops that sell on ebay.
Also ebay is very good for the buyer, if you were ever to be scammed you could return it and ebay will always refund you.

Obviously dont buy from the 0 feedback guy selling his gold chain for 50% spot, the under spot deals usually come from old boomers who are unexperienced and dont know what its worth. Most sellers will have the gram weight in the description so you can calculate it and know if its a good / fair deal.

On authentication; there are several ways to make sure its real, the easiest if youre a noob would be to just pretend that ur gonna sell it to a pawn shop and they will tell you if its real,
At home you can do the weight / magnet test, gold is very dense so it feels very heavy for the size, gold is never magnetic (the clasp part may be magnetic due to the spring).
A simple acid test kit can confirm the karat, and the best method is a specific gravity test (just youtube it)
You measure its water displacement and compare it to a chart of metals, all metals have a different number.

Also beware of GOLD FILLED, usually the stamp will be 14k GF or 1/20 14k GF. Gold filled has a real layer of gold bonded to the outside so the acid test may show a false positive if you dont scratch deep enough.
an experienced person used to handling gold and silver can tell right away just by the rich vibrant color. Gold plated can never look right

Go for more boutique jewellers. You get way nicer rings. The only decent big retailer is Tiffany and they're a rip off

This too. Although all diamonds are a scam paying 2x the price for "natural" diamonds is an utter retard move. Lab made are diamonds the exact same.

just save your money and get her a 10k tiffany ring. She'll enjoy lording the brand over other girls way more than she'll enjoy LOOKING at a ring.

> $10k ring
> save the money
Maybe in the US but over here in europoorville $10k is half a yearly salary before tax. But you're right about the brand name. Anons here REALLY don't get women when they push things like "i got a lovely amethyst ring for $200 and my wife loves it!"

That's good info for gold, but what about diamonds?
If a seller claims a certain level of clarity it would be hard to test yourself if you aren't an expert. Is there any site that provides a certification for used diamonds or anything like that?

Just get the bitch a fake diamond ring for cheap. Dumb hoes can never tell the different. JEWelry is the biggest scam ever concocted by the tribe. Imagine spending more than 20 dollars for a piece of rock that isn't even magic.

GIA is a must. I have a jew friend (I know) who is a respected jeweler locally in San Diego. A great many jewelers, including Tiffany, don't do GIA. But it's the only true certification to know you're getting a legitimately good stone.

The other thing to keep in mind is the tranche, stepwise function that karats are valued at. The gulf between a 1.75 and 2 karat is ridiculous. My wife has a 1.98 karat ring. Visually indistinguishable from a 2 karat. Saved us 5 grand.

The swing is wild. My boss bought a 2 karat ring in 2010 that is the same quality as the 1.98 karat that I bought my wife in 2021. I paid $14,500. He paid $25,000. In fucking 2010. And my wife's stone is far more brilliant. My boss got jewed. Heavily. Simply because he didn't know anybody in the (((industry)))

My wife later made friends with a hobbyist jewelry designer in a small mountain town to the east of us. She took a look at my wife's ring and told us that, at most, we overpaid by a few hundred bucks. But, that's pocket change. So I felt good that I wasn't screwed.

Buy a lab grown diamond take it to a jeweller to make you a ring.
I did this and didn’t pay the insane margin normal jewellery has.
Mind you the shops don’t like that shit as they are loosing money but screw them.
They will tell you that it’s your loss if they break the stone so take it to someone who really does make a living from actually making jewellery.
Also buy the stone from a gem dealer and not some glamorous website.
You can probably go for IF stone

yes, brilliant marketing too. dabeers not only artificially jacked the price of diamonds because they hold a monopoly. they also ran a successful advertising campaign that brainwashed women into thinking they need a diamond ring to get married. classes are taught on the genius of this campaign. right up there with that time edward bernays got paid by pork farmers to convince us bacon was an essential part of breakfast. something we rarely ate before this.
