The United States shifted from being a dominant manufacturing power in all respects, to instead owning loads of factories overseas.
This was a result of it's post WW2 advantage, where it had physically destroyed the industry of it it's industrial competition, waning through the 1960s and 70s.
American industry had become lax and industry in Germany, Japan and elsewhere had comparable productivity and lower wages.
So much of the industry went out of the US; the profits still came back to the US but the actual manufacturing happened elsewhere, this was Garanteed by America's tremendous military.
This was also accompanied by big tax breaks and the implementation of the 401k.
The result was that people made more money through owning stocks and shares and this put downwards pressure on wages.
Ultimately employers will only pay you what they need to pay you, at an industry level if people are making money elsewhere it means that they will work for less.
The part of pay that used to make up pensions could now simply be achieved through capital gains.

America has shifted more to an economy where a large and wealthy upper middle class that works mostly in administration and financial/high tech services makes lots of money through stocks and shares that make their profit overseas and they then spend it on services in the US.
