To your average normalfag it is extremely hard. Engineering colleges are typically among the most selective departments of their universities because they get drowned in applications by shitters who fail to make the cut. I have worked in the engineering college of my local university for almost 10 years now. The departments of biomedical and mechanical engineering are the 2 most selective majors in the whole university. Undergrads have to write a whole second application to get in. The vast majority of the students don't do this because they consider a 12 credit/semester courseload to be an overwhelming amount of work when pretty much every major in the engineering college demands 15-18. You are severely underestimating how STEM-disinclined the average undergrad is.

Engineering is and always has been a massive filter for incoming undergrad students purely because it is basically an applied physics and math degree of varying flavors and they nope the fuck out of that. Take a step back and remember that for your average normalfag, math and physics are hard. I forget which plane it was, but there was a military aircraft a while back where they had to completely redesign the entire electrical system from the ground up.
It was designed for a time where all components (i.e. resistors, capacitors, inductors) were all custom hand-made, meaning they were to specific values (like 13.2) rather than the standard values (e.g. 10, 15, 22, 33) that we use now.
All of the inductors, for example, were hand-wound by a little old lady at the back of the factory, and once she retired nobody else could make them as accurately as her.

Considering that the Apollo program had shit like pic related, it doesn't surprise me at all that we can't build them any more. Especially when you consider just how much of that knowledge was never even written down, and was only in the experience of the (now retired) engineers and technicians.
