Public transportation and the lack of general mobility it causes stifles an economy, reducing people's options for employment & business's options for employees. The greater flexibility & mobility cars enable are a massive boon to the economy in general. Plus passenger trains clog up the rail lines, making all sorts of bulk goods more expensive.
