You just tell people no and make bullshit spreadsheets that discuss financials on why you want to say no.
Basically your the tard-wrangler for engineers and sales that want to add in autistically useless features to sell to one specific customer but those same features are unwanted by the masses.
So you tell sales to go fuck themselves daily and you babysit autistic engineers to get them to stay focused on the features that are important.
You'd be surprised how stupid smart people can be once you start managing them.

As far as skills go it can be summed up as follows:
- Excel (50% of the job)
- PowerPoint (40% of the job)
- Elementary finance (10% of the job)
- Whatever technical know-how related to your industry (for me its hvac so I need to know all the hvac jargon)

Read "The 10-day MBA" or "Product Management's Sacred Seven" and you'll learn the bulk of the skills needed.
Also learn to pretend to be present in meetings.
I'm triple booked in any given time slot.
Most meeting don't actually need you there since the Project Manager will handle the bulk of the lifting, but the company still requires me to zoom in.
You only speak up when people are discussing features or are launching the product, everything else is someone else's job (Usually engineering or project management).

If a PM is directly trying to get you to do something it's usually a project manager, they handle day-to-day task management. These are your type to go get a PMP cert.
In Product I only ever talk to team/department leads like principal roles, engineering/portfolio/finance/sales/marketing managers, etc. and only on rare instances for very specific items to actual engineers/developers.
Program is supposed to be a inter-departmental role so idk too much about them since it seems to vary wildly depending on company.

But tl;dr I wouldn't go to you to ask for something, I'd go to your principal engineer.

ME was the hot career in the 80s/90s so everyone graduating now spent their whole lives where their parents told their kids to go be an ME. OP, like myself, made the mistake of believing their parents actually knew anything about the labor market. Today there are ~3k new ME jobs in the US each year, however there are also 30k new ME grads in the US each year and this doesn't account for the amount of third worlders with ME degrees that get imported each year. The field became largely worthless and anyone incapable of pivoting to adjacent roles is getting shit pay.

DO NOT study ME, DO NOT believe people that tell you “Mechanical Engineering is super flexible, you can practically work anywhere :)”

It is NOT flexible, if you want to do engineering work EE is 1000x more flexible in the current job market. If you want to do technical work that’s actually compensated study CS (even though there will probably be a glut of CS grads sometime just like in ME), but don’t fall for the mechanical engineering meme. Nobody gives a fuck that you’re an engineer, they want relevant work experience, you’re not viewed as some genius that can learn anything.

There are MEs that still make $100k+. Those are the guys with over a decade experience. According to the BLS, the typical starting salary for a BSME in the US is $55k. I started at $60k. Even with going back to school and getting a MSME I was only getting offers in the $70k range with 3 years experience. I didn't take the 70k offer and started casting a wider net. When I got the product management job my initial offer was $170k.

Literally just get a marketing degree then go for an MBA. The amount of work to the level of reward you get as an engineer is absolutely retarded. I make almost 3x now in a bullshit business role for doing a fraction of the work I was doing as an engineer.

Also when shit really goes sideways, the US devs are always ultimately on the hook for the emergency stuff which is the most exhausting part of the job.

Learn to code and write queries and take notes in meetings and mentor less experienced coworkers and read logs and understand statistics and use dozens of domain-specific tools depending on your stack, industry, and even company. No big deal. But if you don't understand abstraction or if you can't peel back layers of abstract indirection to understand the actual state of hundreds of machines running in data centers on multiple continents you're not cut out for the big leagues.

But it's totally a bubble and we don't earn it. This whole internet thing is just going to blow over.

i got the internship in college and accepted a full time offer senior year, now i got a promotion to mid-level so that's a bit over 100k total comp (salary + small bonus and like 7k a year of fully vested retirement contributions). i work at home because they'd lose too many employees if they called us back, we have insane turnover right now.
i live in flyover country, this is for one of the big DoD contractors. think something adjacent to boeing or lockheed but i don't work in the 'bombing arabs' division. entry level was about 85k, senior level makes about 115-125k.

>>50640467
i get what you're saying but mine is actually legit. this is a bog standard position in this industry. lockheed puts their hiring ranges in their job postings, you can look there for what my competitors pay (hint: it's usually the middle of the range).

No. I live off of 2-3 dollars a day, Rice, beans, chicken, and spices. Its not extravagant by any means. I suppose its a matter of perspective. buying in bulk helps, 20lbs of flour enough for a year of your bread needs when mixed into your diet, 20 lbs of rice, is the same, ect. A lot of your diet can be pantry safe cheap grains and canned proteins, then your weekly perishables are just butter, milk, eggs, and whatever discount meat is on sale.
Not accusing you of being extravagant by any means (8 bucks a day), its about what i would expect if oyu made every meal home cooked, and you should have a decent selection of variety. Not saying it should be less, just that it could be worse or something a min wage retard like me had to live on

it's as the goy that responded to you says
this kind of pay typically gets doled out to (usually) men that employers evaluate as being "pro-social", meaning no matter what they make, they will burn through it on consumption
to actually get in the position of earning a high income you have to unironically bamboozle people into believing you are this type while in reality living like a broke college student and not even thinking about interacting with women, until it's too late for them to do anything about it

that's what I did, and my bosses are literally seething at how much FU money I have

good on you for missing my point. companies scale their pay based on your location. you can double your pay by moving to california but your buying power would stay the same. don't underestimate the effort these companies put into extracting every cent out of you.

Those who choose to rape the very agony that threatens them will triumph.
