Based on this definition I fail to see how two consecutive quarters of contraction would not be a recession. Yes unemployment is low but inflation has given every worker a sizable pay cut. Every single one that sounds spread across the market to me. The reason for the loose wording is that there can be times the economy doesn't contract as much or as long and it's still a recession. Not the other way around.
