Please explain how you want to store enough renewable output to get you through winter. This is it. This is the whole problem about them. Unless you have a workable solution for that, they aren't ready for prime time yet. Fukishima, Three mile island, Chernobyl all of these come to mind and about a dozen others that didnt pan out but could have gone much much worse. The fact is, we're very irresponsible and if nuclear power was seriously considered, we would need to put serious research and development into building in as many fail safes as possible and it would need to be inspected and there would need to be some kind of guarantee that it will be safe. The issue is that its hard to trust anyone with that kind of power, the ability to generate that much radioactivity just through being irresponsible.

it's not about the goddamn Fisher-Price-Solar-Panelinos on some random anon's roof, it's about the nationwide generation of enough energy to *reliably* power an entire country's economy (industry, transportation, the whole shebang) even throughout the darkest of winters without it standing still when the sun doesn't happen to shine for a week. That's what the whole debate should be about. If you ever travel by train though Germany you'd see that they have absolutely PLASTERED their entire landscape with paneled houses and wind turbines and still in the winter (December last year was an example) all that infrastructure didn't even produce 1% of the needed load at the worst of times.

Caused by a natural disaster and that had no effect on most of the country. Non-nuclear industries cause disasters that wipe out towns or make areas inhospitable too. There are plenty of places where some factory was dumping shit in the ground and now it's a toxic wasteland. People just take nuclear more seriously. Fukushima wasn't like a nuclear bomb going off which is what people imagine a nuclear meltdown to be.

You clearly don't know what the fuck your talking about. The radiation produced for a brief period from a nuclear bomb is nothing compared to what a true meltdown like Chernobyl actually is. The elephants foot will still kill you in just minutes from you standing next to it. If they hadn't sacrificed thousands of lives to mine under it and stop it from seeping into the water table, it would have poisoned millions of eastern Europeans to death. It could have killed upwards of 40 million people if those guys didn't go in butt naked and melt themselves to death to create a space to fill in with concrete and other materials to stop it from getting into the water supply.

The radiation that a true meltdown can cause is equivalent to a nuclear bomb going off over and over again. It's one of those things where if you fuck up the environment pays the price more than anything else we could do to it.

Nuclear is something where if you fuck up and you don't pour millions if not billions of dollars into cleaning it up and preventing further contamination, it can destroy the entire ecosystem in the entire region.

Of course, nature has taken back Chernobyl, but that's because the reactor has cooled down over time significantly. At first, millions of tons of top soil had to be dug up, the clean up was gargantuan. Just because you don't automatically see the results doesn't mean it's not happening with Fukushima.

That sort of fuck up would never ever even happen outside of a natural disaster in a lot of the western world anyway. The alternatives destroy ecosystems too. Lithium does not magically grow on trees and oil doesn't just come out of a tap. Nuclear is incredibly clean as long as there is no major fuck up and there is no reason there ever would be in the middle of Sweden or somewhere.

There is a massive cleanup operation going in in Fukushima too but it isn't as disasterous as Chernobyl because Japs aren't slavnigger commies. People died when it happened but people die in tsunamis anyway. I'm surprised you would even say nature had reclaimed Chernobyl if you want to be anti-nuclear because it really wasn't even that long ago that it happened.
