Japs have a literal mmo economy that is deflationary due to players storing and leaving most of their gold in their accounts and not spending it.

They have strong exports and domestic demand for domestic goods.

Its more beneficial for them to keep bond rates low, encouraging business spending and investing(they have been desperately trying to do this and stimulate inflation for years) and let the yen fall(which boosts exports so its not all bad) than protect the yen, and raise yields and cause a big reduction in business spending and investment.

They can take a lower yen better than the effect of increasing yields now.

You are correct, Apple's phones are really popular in Japan, and have been so for the better part of a decade now, despite Sony and some other Japanese brands producing some decent android phones. That said, the iPhone is an anomaly in the Japanese market; for pretty much every other good the Nips show strong domestic preferences. I'm guessing you've never worked freelance. At the very lowest I make $50-$100 an hour. It's easy to make $1k or $2k in a single day working with universities or other small companies/organizations simply by translating a dozen pages of a kid book teaching about ocean pollution etc. Sure freelance sucked for the first few years but make good connections and it's very comfy, I'd recommend it to anyone.

I did freelance translation to pay my way through school/learn the language with only n2, but realistically no one cares about any certifications as long as you can do the job. As you build a reputation you'll get more consistent work. I did everything online. Don't do any video/audio transcribing because the pay is always garbage and you need additional skillets (ie. Subbing, timing) and you'll run into issues like audio/video quality being dogshit.

I was good at PowerPoint and excel so I translated a lot of work presentations since that's what I was already good at. Also did engineering documents since that was what my degree was in. If you're a lawyer, legal documents would work better, etc.

I wouldn't want to do translation full-time, but as long as you avoid the customers looking for low quality work you'll make decent money.
