no real knowledge or expertise
dad fucked up in the stock market- got hit with the crash and we're doing alright but it still hurt- I just want to be safe and generate something

OK, $5000 is decent to start with stocks and funds.

If you wish to invest in stocks, read "The Intelligent Investor" by Ben Graham (that's a classic book). Stocks can earn much, but you have to be good at it, and there's always some risk.

The simpler, safest way to invest is the three fund portfolio method (i.e. investing in three specific index funds, Vanguard ones for example). Google "three fund portfolio" and you'll have more details.

Then the most important thing is discipline - saving every month without exception, living below your means, avoiding panic sells, etc.

You can become a millionaire in less than 15 or 20 years, without any kind of effort, with this method.

Also, if you have no expertise in a given field, you should not think about starting a company in said field.

Yeah, I can see how that's pretty foolish

is /biz/ always this quiet or is everyone busy making money?

/biz/ is one of the slowest boards of 4chan.

We're probably 80% desperate NEETs and 20% real investors and businessmen, with one or two guys having more than $10,000,000.

When you say be good at it
you mean research, and be savy with your money dont make undue risks and the like?
Is it simply practice and reading that will get you to that point?

Get a nice paying job and invest everything in mutual funds , before investing you should look for an emergency fund . Start early , get those compund interests rolling .

Yes, be savvy, have some discipline, know what you're doing (Ben Graham will help) and you'll do better than many retail "investors".
Now, if you have a good eye, it can be even more profitable.

Even /lit/ is faster than /biz/.
