I left home at 18 and joined the military, but when I got out I went back home and stayed there while I went to trade school. It was a better decision, both financially (allowed me to stack cash from work + stipends and save up for a down payment and a car) and holistically (let me adjust to the civilian without being literally thrown to the wolves.)

It's a doubled-edged sword, I'll give you that, but honestly for my kids I won't try to force them out of my house as long as they're being productive and working towards a goal. Staying at home to build up money and save up for the next step is a rational decision. But I won't indulge a leech, even if it is my own kid, and it'll be for their own good.
