Say I want to start a site/service/app that compiles users reviews for something, like Yelp. My concern is if I release it to the public blank, without it being pre-poluated with at least some initial reviews people won't bother with using the app enough to add their own reviews and making it grow organically. Does anyone know how these sorts of sites dealt with this?

good luck. your best bet is to do something on a local/regional basis and expand slowly.
