I got a little bit lucky. I do a lot of random lookups on Wikipedia when I don't know something and it was one of those days. I searched most crowdfunded project ever, expecting to see Star Citizen (I wanted to know how much they'd made) and saw that it wasn't the highest. At the time (October, last year) it was the DAO.

I spent the next 24 hours trying to understand what the fuck I was reading, and promptly bought 4k$ worth of ETH the next day. I waited through December when it was worth only 7$ (it was 12$ when I got it), and then watched it shoot up a lot. I started diversifying in May and made quite a lot more.
