The problem with learning the language is that people will naturally start expecting you to at least try to behave like the local people, which you actually don't want to do. Even if you try your best, they will constantly suspect you of deliberately taking advantage of peoples' expectation that you are naturally "greedy" "insensitive" and "selfish." Basically, people will suspect you of gaijinsmashing even when you aren't (which will make you resentful and want to, out of spite).

The way out of this is simply to resist assimilating at all. If you can't even speak their language, not only will almost no-one be able to treat you this way, but you won't even be able to understand when they try.

The other thing you have to understand is that they are unapologetically exclusive and uninclusive. Retiring is really hard after you make it. I still can't decide to leave my job because of this fear I will get bored without it.

I speak pretty good Japanese. So I went into a McDonalds once and the chick working at the counter was blonde. We had a full conversation in Japanese even though we both probably knew English. It was really surreal.

You'll have fun, and, who knows, maybe you'll be the 5% that "makes it" or adapts. Japanese culture is just really fucking rigid and cold. desu foreigners have it easier in some ways because of that, as you can exist somewhat outside of it. But connecting with Japanese people, in my experience, is far harder than in China (worked for 2 years in both, and was a student in one). Not sure about Korea or the other Asia nations. Japan really is a unique place. So just enjoy your time there, and try to avoid foreigner group trappings, BUT also keep groups of foreign friends, because you will never be Japanese, nor should you want to be. The sad part is that just integrating as a "foreigner in Japan" doesn't work like how foreigners integrate in Western nations. Hell, even if you become a full Japanese citizen, you do not have full rights. Even people born in Japan who are half-Japanese are treated differently. It's a very unforgiving culture beneath the surface.

Have fun though, and enjoy it. I promise you that no mental preparation can get you ready for what Japan really is like, but having those expectations going in will keep things in perspective. Watch the weebs crash and burn LOL

Except even for native Japanese, the hierarchy is so rigid that their companies and economy can't innovate, they have insane commutes, live in tiny shitboxes, make crap wages, and only nations like Korea have a higher suicide rate.
