Metals are worthless. Within 20 years we'll be harvesting asteroids that contain more silver and gold than have ever been harvested on Earth in its entire history. Gold will be so cheap we'll be making everything out of it. Anyone who invests in metals now is retarded. Space X and Elon Musk will be bringing in trillions of tons of cheap gold per day within a few years. The current historic low of gold is the highest it will ever be again. Future generations will treat gold the way we treat aluminum now. 500 years ago aluminum was the rarest and most expensive metal in the world. Today it's used to make cheap cans.

We've landed multiple probes on moving asteroids to date. It's getting easier all the time. Next one will have a booster to move it into Earth orbit for cheap mining. The vast asteroid wealth is easier and cheaper to access than the subterranean wealth. Cheap simple bots just grind up the asteroid and drop the metal into the atmosphere. Metal is going to be absurdly cheap in the next century. We're going to have more gold, diamond, silver, and iron than we've ever had in history. This is the ultimate goal of Space X. Asteroid mining will be 99.99% of the global economy. If you're not invested in it you're missing the largest gold rush in human history and you'll be poor for eternity. First company to tap asteroid resources will be worth more than any nation or the Dutch East India Company.

Retard. Do you even know how much gold, iron, silver and other metals are in the asteroids? It's more wealth than everything made by all human economies over the entire recorded history combined. All of the gold mined in human history amounts to a 64' cube. There is more gold than that in a single asteroid. When we get asteroid mining going we are going to increase the amount of gold, silver, iron, and other metals by 10,000% every day for the rest of history. There is that much metal just sitting in easily mineable asteroids. The amount of wealth we can gain from asteroid mining puts all other sources of wealth to shame. In the future there will be two kinds of people, those who got in on the asteroid mining boom, and the extremely poor dying underclass of worthless people.

Yes. You act as if the demand is not increasing. Aluminum demand in 1400 was relatively low, supply was low, cost was high. But today aluminum is common, cheap, and demand has never been higher. We need far more gold than we have now. Same with all precious metals we can get from asteroids. We're running out of metals on Earth due to high tech manufacturing. We need asteroid mining to keep it going or else production ceases.

I would imagine in the early stages some of the processing of the ores would still be done on earth. Sending some robots to dig them up on the surface is easy. Space refineries might take a while, and the initial cost to bring the resources to do so from earth (before they're sourced from space) will be large.

how so? from everything i ve been able to find, even the most metal rich space rocks are only likely marginally richer than what we already find here on the earths surface. The earths had billions of years to concentrate ore bodies where we can reach them, were going to have to not only prospect each of the tens of millions of space rocks, but than drill them without mechanical failure, process them with technology that has yet to appear, and than either use the resources in space or ship that material back to earth. I swear a generation raised on minecraft thinks that you can just put ores in a magic box and get every element out in its pure form with little mechanical failure.

Look bro, I'm not going to deny that asteroid mining will ONE DAY be a thing and we will have an abundance of rare metals. But that day is far away. You can use the argument of "oh, but look at the speed of development and how we didn't think any of this was capable 50 years ago." And that's true. But we need a lot of NEW technologies to be created before we can even think about mining an asteroid.

1
>Cost of putting things into space
Sure, SpaceX is lowering that price. But it's still SUPER fucking expensive to send any weight into orbit, let alone further and past the asteroid belt

2
>Mining operations are fucking HUGE
Have you ever seen a mining operation? This isn't the Curiosity rover with a fucking pickaxe and shovel. Mining pits and shafts are enormous and require tons of supplies. Supplies that are heavy and cost money.

3
>The difficulty in getting out of orbit
Okay, now we need to get this heavy equipment off of fucking earth. Screw the money, just the logistics of the weight and acceleration is hard as fuck.

4
>Getting it back
Unless this asteroid is very close to us (and we can mine it in such a fast timeframe before it passes us by completely), we can't just throw the mined materials into space and let earth's gravity snag it. Firstly, it would all burn up in the atmosphere upon reentry. Secondly, even if the materials survived the burn and impact, unless this asteroid was right next to earth it would not be attracted to its gravity.

So that means that we have to bring the materials BACK on another fucking shuttle of sorts? So now we have to have enough fuel to get to the asteroid, but also TO GET BACK?! And on top of that, we have to have enough fuel to accelerate all of this newly mined material back?

Look, I'm not saying it's impossible. In fact, it will be a certainty as we progress as a species, a civilization, and a society. But this is NOT a 10 year plan.
