it's mostly whales washing their money right now, but NFT's have a huge potential at becoming mainstream.

this shit reeks of bubble. Look at the fucking art. The only reason people are willing to pay money for them is the NFT novelty. go ahead and try to make your money now, but be cautious about "investing" in NFTs long-term

ya ,100% it's just like the ICO bubble. I wouldn't buy any of that NFT garbage, but investing in the NFT dApps might be the ticket to mars.

It feels insane holding buying urbit on opensea and knowing that I'm the only fucking person buying something useful on that site and everyone else is investing millions of dollars in pixelated pictures of blaq people

nope
not novelty

just crappy art that people think will increase in value overtime because of NFT-Crypto-Fomo-Hype .. everyone is saying NFT is the new shit , but no one actually cares about how good the art is, only what kind of money it will sell for once they purchase it now and hodl

I think it's like a picture or drawing is attached to a unique crypto type token which only exists as a representation of ownership of that image.

Even though you can right click and save those images, you don't own the token of that image.

It's a lot of gay ass tulip mania.

previously with digital art, there was no way to prove it's scarcity/originality, which is now possible with the blockchain. Also it removes the middle men for artists to distribute their stuff.

here's a good talk about it:

NFT just means non-fungible token, like imagine if each bitcoin had a special name or picture. For urbit, the tokens are unique addresses for use on the urbit computing network. For the average normie, it means your valueless meme coin has a very special picture attached to it

Yep but it's only getting attention now.
I think it could be really valuable and useful for record companies (sell limited tracks/albums without middle men), artists (sell one-of-a-kind works without middlemen) or video game developers (replace current digital markets like the Steam marketplace or EA's Utlimate Team market).

It's a little more complex in that my (layman) understanding of NEM is more of an annotation whereas urbit IDs are user names for a computing protocol that have associated values like reputation, btc wallets, sub-IDs.

If I were to shill urbit stars as a get rich quick scheme, I'd say you basically are buying 65,000 licenses that currently sell for about $10 each, bundled for $4-5k. But the real value is as a buy and hold, because the star will also collect hosting fees in exchange for services in the future. I truly believe it'll be in every office of major corporations in like 10-15 years max, the benefits from eg. not having to pay $6/user/month for slack are just too big

ok except the art itself is not scarce
the token is scarce, and it's only connection to the art is that some random exchange said so

your have ownership of the token - you are the only person who can interact with it on the blockchain
meanwhile, every person on the planet can interact with your art in exactly the same manner as you. that is not "ownership."

well, it's not like i'm buying any NFT art, just want to profit off of normies. Also, with it's current state, you are right, not much to do with your "original" art sitting on your wallet, but there are definitely many useful applications to NFT's ... just a matter of time

It's really only for those high echelon collectors. They love having proof validated by thousands of people, it's what gives them joy. If it costs 1.1m all the more they can show off their wealth.

Whatever someone shills about being the future own ownership is bs, but it has huge trend potential for people in classes who spend more on image than substance. Imagine betting on human vanity, and you can profit. Problem is how to make it trendy.
