It's a test framework for DOT parachains. DOT (like Ethereum) is a coin set up to run a VM and let people build decentralized apps. KSM is a test network that lets people build their parachains and test them. To actually test your app and make sure it scales it needs volume, and I assume KSM has some novel way of providing you traffic/transactions that you would have a hard time replicating.

I haven't read into implementations but I do know the high level idea. It's pretty smart, and I wouldn't be shocked if similar coins exist and are up-and-coming in the ETH/BSC/ADA space.
