basically, you will need to pick a paid (for instance QUICK-ETH) and own both tokens in the pair.

follow the news aggregator sites, follow some crypto news twitter bots, just browse around a few places an hour or so a day in the evening and see who is announcing this or that upcoming event, if its confirmed by a companies own twitter or website ill buy it assuming it hasnt recently had a massive 2x+ spike in price.
coinmarketcal is the simplest aggregator of upcoming news and has a nice exchange filter if i miss anything but they can often be days behind a company announcing something, youll never get the best prices just following on there and over time it makes a huge difference to outcomes.
average hold time is anything from a month to a week, again i never buy anything thats recently done more than a 2x in the past few months market cycle, never by anything thats just a couple of days hold as youre at the mercy of other market influences on the day scale.
atm im holding ghst, wan, near, hard, waxp and flm, selling them all in the coming week having bought them through february.
later in march and up until april ill be selling loom, kava, strax, hnt, dusk and amb. no point going into any sort of details here, its not like you can go back in time and buy at whatever prices i post and theres no way to prove any of this.
