to answer the rest of your question though, it's just a feeling. I just felt that I'd be much happier if I was a girl. I'm short, skinny, I had long hair even as a kid, etc. It's just a natural feeling to me that I should be woman. I guess I could be a feminine guy, but then the problem is that once men get past their teens, it becomes much harder to actually look effeminate at all and you just look gross. I get what you're saying. My only qualm with this is the need for someone else to tell me who they are. Appearance and clothing have been used forever to determine relation with the other. There is a feeling of dishonesty and therefore mistrust that appears when something masquerades as something else: it becomes 2 things at the same time, and that just doesn't fly.
No wonder trans people feel alienated cos you can never rely on consistent perception and reaction (and therefore self reinforcement) from the outside world. You have to consistently generate your self world from within unless you can "pass" (or at least feel accepted) most of the time. Sounds tough and tiring.
