At what purity of coins does the silver price start to lag behind spot?

I'm looking at old Italian and French coins, most of which are 835, which should be fine. But what about lower purities like 630 or 500. If I ever needed to sell them, would I get too much below spot for it to be worthwhile?

I already have plenty of 999 bullion, but I'm looking to diversify with old circulation coins. Mainly so I can't fondle them and hear them go clink.

i would say it depends on why silver is going up. if it's driven by industry, 999 silver is best, because it doesn't have to be refined.

if it's due to something like high inflation, i don't see why you wouldn't get spot or very close to it no matter what the composition.

Let's say you are a boomer who wants a low-risk investment vehicle to earn steady income while preserving your wealth. US treasuries, i.e. government debt, are pretty much the gold standard (yes I know the irony of what I'm saying, bear with me) of risk-free return. You might only make a few % APY nominally, but unless the government of the US collapses you can expect to have your investment paid back. So from your perspective, as long as the yield beats inflation, you will come out ahead.

Now we are seeing higher inflation expectations due to tons of money printing. This means people will want a higher yield on treasuries, because otherwise they would have a NEGATIVE real return when adjusted for inflation. If people sell treasuries because they are unattractive, the price falls, and the yield (which moves inversely to price) will rise until an equilibrium is reached where they appear attractive again.

This is all well and good in a healthy free market. However, what if your market is neither free nor healthy? If the economy is in a debt spiral where the government and corporations can only continue operation with low-interest rate debt and refinancing, then a rise in interest rates would be a death sentence.

This is where the federal reserve steps in. They do "quantitative easing" (QE), which is effectively them just buying government debt directly. This puts upward pressure on the price, and therefore downward pressure on yields. The fed has been doing this basically continuously since the 2008 crash. Right now the fed is doing about $80 billion a month in QE, but we are still seeing rates rise. Rates rising is bad, again, because the economy is in a debt bubble and needs them low. So either the fed must buy even MORE treasuries, which means more money printing, or the whole thing falls apart.

Correct. An inflationary "upward crash" is much more politically favorable than another Great Depression. The signs to look for are when the market tanks 5% in a day and the federal reserve swoops in to save the day.

Currently the fed has stated that they will continue on their current QE trajectory. If they were to hint that they were going to increase QE, this itself would signal to investors that inflation expectations are rising. Inflation is a monster, sometimes described as a genie in a bottle. It's not simply a mathematical function, it's a psychological phenomenon. That's why the fed insists that we should be concerned about deflation at all times. If people realized what the actual inflation rate was (asset prices rising, shadowstats inflation hovering around 10% for consumer goods), then this psychological realization itself would spur inflation even higher, since people will not want to hold fiat. It's a positive feedback loop, and this is how you get "hyperinflation," which is the endgame for any fiat system.

Even with all its money printing, the fed does NOT want hyperinflation. "Shadow" inflation is their best tool to avoid a deflationary crash. So their best course of action is to hold off on announcing more QE for as long as possible. Eventually I suspect they will have to announce Yield Curve Control (YCC), which means they put a hard upper limit on the interest rate of the 10 year treasury. This is accomplished by unlimited QE purchases until the interest rate target is met. Obviously this would be highly inflationary though, so simply announcing YCC would be a VERY bad sign, which is why they've been so quiet and not made any changes to policy in a year or so.

Avoid wartime nickels, their silver content is pretty shitty. I have a roll for the novelty but not as a main stack. 90% quarter are a great choice, mercury dimes have super high premiums right now so it's your call. Having very small divisible amounts of silver like a silver dime is good if it actually gets used directly as money, but otherwise just stack what is cheapest and reasonably pure.

OK this is making sense. The issue with mass psychological phenomenon is twofold, they spread and they have second-order (Nth-order) effects. What should we be looking for in terms of gauging the spread - how fast it's getting, and the second order effects - how bad it's getting? Or will the wheels come off too fast for any of that to matter?

Bond yields go up, silver goes down.
Bond yields were 5%, silver was cheaper.
The scheme trends accordingly, and makes sense.

But when the increase stops and the numbers fall back down, silver rises again. The last time this happened was 2008, and silver hit $50/ozt. Then the big banks were bailed out and everything went *"back to normal"* because all we do was kick the can down the road a bit.

Bond yields are back up. The can is at our feet again. But this time it's not the dot com industry. It's not real estate. Its EVERYTHING. Its the WHOLE MARKET, because it's real money - Gold and Silver - in the spotlight this time. You can print the housing crisis away, you can print the tech bubble away, but gold and silver are god's bearer-bonds - you can't print more to ease the market.

Welcome to the comfy world of stacking, your experience getting boned by the clownmarket then driving you to the safety of hard precious assets is what we here expect to occur worldwide soon. It's hard to answer your question to any great precision, but think about it from a /biz/ cryptocurrency perspective. If your little sister starts asking about how to buy bitcoin, you know the top is in, right? Well imagine if your little sister starts talking about inflation. That would be a very startling sign that hyperinflation is imminent. I don't really know what good trying to time this would do you, just keep stacking real assets and commodities and prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

>>29683311
When interest rates rise, then the "gold standard" of government debt I mentioned before becomes more attractive again. The main competitor for a monetary safe haven is gold, meaning if interest rates rise, then gold demand and prices should fall, which is what we've been seeing for over a month now. However, the rising interest rate game cannot continue forever, it's an unsustainable situation. If we get fed printing to drive rates back down, then gold will be allowed to shine again, now with a much larger money supply as well. If we get a deflationary crash, then spot prices will crash like we saw in March 2020, but demand for physical metal will go even higher than it is right now. Gold and silver will be "cheaper" temporarily, but the only way to profit off of this would be by buying mining stocks at a dip, and hoping the economy remains relatively functional so that these stocks can actually perform in a gold bull market.

>> No.29683677

Just a friendly reminder: Comex rule 589 happened yesterday.
When all the "weak hands" have sold their physical silver, no one else will want to sell any ounce of silver.
In this case, auctions will rise and this rise could be extremely brutal. COMEX Rule 589, published in december 2014, provided for this scenario. If the bidding on the silver goes up by $3, without anyone agreeing to sell at this price, the market pauses for two minutes, then the auction resumes. In 10 or 12 minutes, the price can go up to $12. As the daily increase limit is reached, the market will be closed until the following day, without any fixing. Without fixing, no one will be able to buy or sell physical silver. The next day, the same scenario will be in play, the auction will resume with the initial price + $12 of the day before and if no one wants to sell, the price will rise again by $12.

But I bought anyway. Why? The same people who tell you .625 or .500 silver "are not worth it" are the same ones that shit themselves over a big ol' bag of war nickels or 40% Kennedy halves. If you can get them at or very near today's spot for the ASW, I don't see a problem. That's 100% true though. Only retards who don't understand inflation would think otherwise.

This year we are facing a massive DEFLATIONARY bust, not inflationary. And we're talking about broad-based inflation (which includes things like rent which is COLLAPSING), not what price your fucking carton of eggs happens to be at Walmart.

Long-term yes, inflationary, but it's not possible until the deleveraging happens and then people become comfortable enough for velocity to pick up.

Yes. The fed's primary job is to create a balancing act between unemployment and inflation, i.e. between a Great Depression and hyperinflation, given how bad things have gotten. They realize now that things have to run a little "hotter" than usual to avoid a crash, so the usual 2% Goldilocks inflation target is not going to cut it. If we put our faith in the fed, expect high, but non-hyper inflation over the next few years as they desperately try to maintain control.

Not sure about being able to buy a house with a stack (unless it's really big)

my guys are pretty good. last time I went, he told me that some guy bought a coin and it fell out of his pocket downtown. he called the LCS and the proprietor checked out the area. lo and behold, it'd fallen between two stones and was relatively safe there. picked it up, called him back, the customer got his coin. very easy to have said, "sorry bro, someone must've taken it."

Man I don't even like Biden but none of the shit he'll do in office will have any real impact and you can bet me on that. The guy's already shooting down the """"socialist/communist"""" Dems by trying to deny them the minimum wage increase and student loan forgiveness. The health secretary? Pure performative bs to appease the neolibs.

Kamala's the one I worry about. Biden's your dumb uncle, but Kamala is almost stupidly malicious.

agreed and willing to bet $100 that biden doesn't even know he's president right now. I hope he can keep his remaining lucidity long enough to forgive $10k student loans though. might as well benefit from the impending inflation, instead of wasting it all on illegal beaners.

not to turn this into /pol/ but my concern is that biden is old, he could drop dead at any time, and then we will instantly have not only the first female president, but a nigger female president.
