It's actually pretty good tech, a much better concept than blockchain. You have your very own ledger(s) and you can walk up in a place that runs Holochain on Wi-Fi and connect to their conductor and transact with them AND NO ONE has to know about it. Then this dude can connect to the Holo network (internet) and pass on what you gave him locally to some entity in another part of the world. So it's a much more natural way to interact offline with businesses or public services, that is also part of a bigger network. The problem is a) they frankly haven't explained it all that well b) they just figured basic tech about it this year (after 3 years of tinkering) c) the community has a combination of SJW & moonbois.

The have lost millions on these boxes so I don't see how it's a scam.

They're not releasing the software for 3 reasons: a) it's not ready b) it's easier to support specific types of hardware than any random combination of it (think Apple) c) they need to give some precedence to the people who believed in the project from the start.

But really you're not missing out on anything. If you wanted to develop on Holochain there is a way right now.
