Monero is a 2014 PoW coin. It's not very glamorous compared to new projects. I think it's reasonable to treat it as a swiss bank vault that will inevitably grow in value on a medium long time scale.

Yeah it needs a major catalyst to get attention. Right now the sentiment is very negative which can contribute to a negative feedback loop and discourages newcomers who see other stuff going up 40% per day.

Monero 2021 has not that much to do with Monero from 2014. There have been several hard forks that made it very different.
What it lacks currently is interwovenness with Defi chains and ways that reduce supply by locking people's coins in some stuff.

This take overlooks that the current methods of laundering money, hiding money and evading taxes are all less cost effective and riskier than Monero. Investigating good methods for hiding money, hiring people do it, building enterprises for it are all resource consuming compared to simply buying a coin and being 100% protected.
