Hey /biz/ how about a good old fashioned resume/job application thread? Ive been looking with moderate intensity for about a month or two now, and no dice. I am applying to jobs a bit out of my wheelhouse (controls in the defense sector) but I hope it goes well. How're you guys doing?

What sort of job are you looking for? It's hard to offer advice, since I don't understand your audience. I can tell you right off the bat though that your resume bores the hell out of me. Here's a tip, what's one thing you want the reader to see immediately? Whatever that thing is, it should be where you currently have skills. That's the first place eyes look. Might be best to put your professional experience there.

regarding your resume, looks solid to me, i don't know much about control systems engineering but it's definitely interesting. i'm IT director for a PR company and won't post my resume but work's going good, besides numerous hours of absolute skullfuckery regarding SSL certificates earlier today (and tomorrow morning).

I was tempted to say something like this. I work for a small business though, and the resumes we usually get are worded with far less complexity. My boss is retarded and would probably overlook this resume because it’s too technical and he wouldn’t be able to make heads or tails of what he can do.
Maybe mull around the idea of making it easier to read? Most people who get a resume right off the bat aren’t the ones that’ll understand all the fancy stuff.

Like it isn't that hard to make $1m over 4 years working a part time job and living frugal at which point living modestly, maxing an IRA account, and browsing biz you'll make more money than any employer is going to pay you and you'll be able to do whatever you want instead of needing to be told what to do?

Are you people actually not happy unless someone has you on a leash? Or do you just like being told what to do to earn less than your potential in order to make someone else rich?

I think for me it’s a lack of knowledge, risk aversion, and security. I don’t think you’re being serious but just incase you are. I don’t understand crypto well enough to just invest in things like oracles/etc because it’s too technical and something that I interpret as useful is nothing more than technical fluff to dupe lay people like me, for example, I fell a couple alts that seemed like good investments but they were shit also I have chainlink but I wasn’t here when it was shilled all those years ago and it’s funny because I’ve made more in the last 6 months than I have in 7 years from crypto but my lack of understanding and risk aversion is what’s keeping me from making the insane gains some of you have made here.

being able to write / communicate effectively is absolutely critical and is what has won our firm contracts over competitors. companies that are looking for PR services have an eagle eye for shit copy. we employ a small team of copy editors whose entire job is to take raw marketing materials, briefs, spec sheets, flyers, etc. anything that our clients want to communicate to their customers, and edit the shit out of their 4th grade pajeet-tier rambling into concise and direct messages. especially in the emoji acronym era, being able to clearly express ideas, products, and services is basically our bread and butter. i don't do any of that, i just manage all the tech / server farm / infrastructure etc.

Not my field, but I have interviewed, hired, and trashed enough CVs to know that yours is formatted/written fine. Skills, experience is listed and I can read it easily. What jumps out at me is what is missing - skills in software is noted, but how you got them is not. You say you have client-facing skills but all I can see is you fixing HVAC and other systems. I would be asking you why you are applying for whatever position you are applying for instead of a software job if you have all these skills.
Stuff like 'zero-downtime environments' is a tough sell for me too, seems like you're exaggerating for dramatic effect. You're an engineer, I don't want you to be a whinger or someone who goes on about how hard they have it, neither do I want someone who rewrites history to make themselves seem more heroic. Just fucking maintain the system. Remember I have to sift through 100 of these and 75 of them have a name that has -jeet or chang in it, so just by being European and seeming like you won't be a hassle to work with significantly increases my chance of getting you into interview.
Remember, your CV says "INTERVIEW ME" and your interview says "HIRE ME"

Not bad. As you get more time in the field, grow your professional experience section more and shorten the skills section. Things like oscilloscopse/power supplies/meters/soldering should be a given for your position, no need to mention those; focus the skills that make you stand apart from competition. Education I'd put up top under your header, then professional experience, with skills and leadership activities last. When reviewing resumes, recruiters and hiring managers look at compatibility from previous experience with the open position as the indicator for possible success. Try to give specifics on what you were responsible for and what your accomplishments were.

Unironically go to automation direct. Buy a PLC, buttons, switches, sensors. Learn ladder logic (there are many resources), learn control theory basics, be competent with a multimeter, wire strippers, etc. In america, Rockwell Automation reigns supreme, with siemens,ABB and Schneider up behind them. If possible pirate Studio5000/RSLogix5000 and FactoryTalk ME.

Then apply to a technician position at any company that makes or produces things. I'm sure you can get something as a tech without school but with experience. Its hard to find, but I've seen positions for engineering where its like 5 years with BS., 3 years with MS, 10 years with no degree.

Do not use fonts with serifs, go calibri or arial, no TNR

Seperate resume into experience, skills, education and maybe a bonus section

I know retail and service is hard to word in an exciting way, but id say look for examples and try to make the descriptions come across to whos hiring you as "if you hire me, your life will be so much easier, im doing your job for you nearly"

be strict on fonts, bold text and where it is used, follow a system

never send a word document out to an employer

One of the best pieces of advice ive seen in this thread dude, thank you.

I was laying on the sell yourself thing a little too thick. zero downtime referring to the manufacturing process cannot stop, so I'm used to high stress. Do you think its better to talk about these qualities in plain english?

Also earlier someone pressed me on can I really speak to all of these software skills, and there are certainly a few I'd have to review again. I think I can outline more how all of these skills tied in to my position instead of just over selling myself you know. Thanks man

"Skills" sections in general don't add much to a resume. It only proves that you know those terms exist. I understand wanting to hit all the keywords so it doesn't get filtered, but a better way to do that is to represent your skills in your experience section.

Here is a (mind-numbingly) simple example:
This:
> Experience:
> Built web service using python
Is better than this:
> Skills:
> Python
> Experience:
> Built web service

Recruiters also love quantification. The less abstract you can make your experience, the better. Confidence and ownership are also important aspects.

For example:
> Experience
> Designed and built python web application serving 200,000 users monthly

Your first point under "Lead Control Systems Engineer" is nearly perfect. Adding how many engineers you led (with some embellishment of course) would really seal it.

Good luck out there!

It's tough to judge these types of technical resumes, they are written and read by autists. But be more concise with your language and say what you actually mean. Id prefer more emphasis on what youve accomplished and can do, not a mini story about the circumstances. There's also tons of annoying capitalization and grammar issues. Less is more.
>Customer facing duties
Come on
>Led team... which requires.
Tense issues
>Demonstrated autonomy
Are you a fucking robot?
>zero downtime environments
Unprofessional language
>Collaborated... on previously unreliable systems which cannot experience significant downtime or alter read only code
Tenses and its a mess. Focus on what you did, not what wasn't possible.
>Development FATs
Developed, proofread
>Developmental Intern
Have some fucking spacing between things, its a nightmare to look at
>Graduation-May
Use dates on a calendar, not based around your life events

I sent out job applications to 86 places in my first year of law school. I spent ages setting up phone calls to learn more about each firm or company and seem very interested. I also wrote individualized cover letters for each place and met with the career office weekly to make everything perfect.
Not a single response and I watched classmates who misspelled firm names get interviews and jobs.
All my applications had ".com" instead of ".ca" for my email address.
Just learn and improve, good luck out there man.

well the company i worked at isn't one you've ever heard of, also I had a pretty crappy QC job there so I wasn't happy or making a lot of money. they hired engineers mostly to say they had them but not because they were really necessary. you certainly would get bored with it after 6 months. it was typical supply chain stuff. buy parts, test parts, sell parts. i never saw what they were doing with the parts but we sold everything. hardware, integrated circuits, resistors, capacitors, PCB assemblies, tires, whatever. if it goes on a plane or a tank or in a missile they either have it or can find it.
defense is full of boomer neocons too so you kinda gotta get used to being around that if you aren't already. maybe the bigger companies are different. it's a big industry with lots of moving parts so your experience may vary.

Yeah my job revolves around sitting at a desk all day using excel or CAD, I don’t know jack shit about programming beyond some very basic stuff. I have some mech e friends that went into industrial engineering type roles that probably do something similar to you, I feel like a dumb monkey compared to you guys because I sit around creating new spreadsheets to calculate fatigue in a joint or some other mundane task. I’ve only worked as an engineer for about a year though so I’m still only allowed to do low level stuff, plus I work for a small company. I don’t feel like a real engineer at all, at least not compared to guys like you.

You live with it. You tell your wife you don't know why you didn't land any interviews and you deeply resent everyone undeserving who got a big firm job.
Then, after that tough year you dust yourself off only to learn most firms just switched to 1st year recruit models, cancelling all 2nd and 3rd year recruitment.
Dont let shit like that get you down, just adjust and keep trying. You learn a lot about yourself.

dude on internships I really am at a loss. I know so many companies who have big internship programs. Id say go for small buissnesses, sub 150 employees if possible. I got my foot in the door on some illegal work for free kinda shit initially. And im paranoid so I started looking freshman summer.

Id say put together a portfolio almost like an art major would do. Show you can use solidworks and the like, use autocad, you clearly have good grades as your in gradschool, most positions that are great love MS holders. I tried applying to an aerospace supplier called Moog (fantastic company) but they want MS for nearly everything.

When was looking for fulltime positions out of college, I had a folder of the research I did, senior design project, and all that stuff. On top of resume and CV. It all helps. Get started ASAP

Fair enough, i'm not going to pretend to know the ins and outs of your industry.

I usually figure the smaller the company the better, as sooner or later, more responsbility will be put on you. In my experience, engineers in small comapnies wear many different hats. I cant say I enjoy writing acceptance test documents all the time, or boring as SCADA work, but your on your way man. An engineer is a whore my friend, hopping from new project to new job is normal. Go after the experience, get those grunt hands new things all the time and the money will follow. I think something like half of graduating engineers dont even work under the engineer title.

Too many words. I would drop some of the non relevant experience and add one of those sections with single word or two skills, things that really matter. The comma separated lists will not get read. You need to make sure each sentence is trim and impactful. You just have too many lists of stuff. Needs a little more visual appeal, like a different way of organizing a few attributes in order to break up the monotony.
