A rally in the price of silver fuelled by a sudden burst of interest from retail traders rapidly unwound on Tuesday, with many veteran investors left scratching their heads over the episode.

Silver fell 4.5 per cent in early London dealings to $27.67 an ounce, after leaping as much as 12 per cent the previous day to the highest level in eight years.

The pullback underlines the difficulties facing small investors, even when they combine forces, in influencing the global silver market, where $6bn worth of the metal changes hands in a typical day. It also reflects growing pushback on the internet forum Reddit against the effort to push up silver prices — a strategy posed by a user last week.

I tried paying for my groceries in these silver coins that Peter Schiff sold me and I got laughed at by the attractive checkout girl. The crowd quickly dispersed in disgust and I gave up and sunk down onto my mess. I felt a tap on my shoulder, it was the elderly black security guard, 'come on, son, it's time to leave' he said, 'B-but I'm hedging against inflation' I protested. He shook his head and averted his gaze as he swung a cart in my direction. 'grab ahold of this' he said. I grasped the bottom of the cart and he heaved at the handle and slowly dragged my shit covered form off the premises. As I was being hailed away, I looked back to see a cleaner shoveling the silver speckled mess into a waste bag. She tied a knot in the bag and sent it deep into a trashcan.
