Saving money is a meme except when you are in true poverty mode. I grew up in a USSR apartment room with 5 other families sharing the kitchen and bathroom. No shower. Neighbor kid drew with his shit on the bathroom wall. Etc.

Saving money made sense then.

If you make $2 more an hour, you just made almost 4k more a year.

Focus on increasing your income unless you literally can't afford to shower and dress yourself. Been there, but that mentality sticks too long.

Anon jokes, but it's true housing and commute is the biggest expense. An ideal career would be a position where you're sharing a living space and commute <1mi to work. Do this for 3-5 years and you can leanFIRE

One of the biggest things for me was buying non-perishables in bulk when there's a sale. There's a small basement that came with my apartment and I keep months' worth of toilet paper, toothpaste, deodorant, etc. in there. A decent amount of canned food too, partly because I'm a paranoid-schizoid, but mostly so that I'm never without food in the house.

It's amazing how many people I actually have to tell this, but budget and track your money. Even my close friends and family complain about suddenly not having enough money for bills every single month despite living middle class lives

>Figure out how much you spend on recurring payments each month
>Put that much aside in your checking account
>If you get payed every week, divide that number by four and put that much aside from each paycheck. You will now never be overwhelmed by bills
>Spend whatever you want from the rest of your paycheck
>Whatever you don't spend by the time the next paycheck arrives, use that money to pay off debt, invest, or place in a savings account
You are now financially responsible.

Buy used, not ancient but something 1-3 years old is much cheaper while still being just as useful (Cars, furniture, vacuum, whatever) and possibly still under warranty.
Live frugal and minimalistic, last time I bought clothes was 10 years ago, nothing wrong with what I have no need to buy more. My phone is 3 years old, does what I need perfectly, will keep for another 3 if I can.
Anything you "want" put in your online basket for 2 weeks, when you come back to it see if you still want it, 90% of the time you won't.
Money sat in the bank is rotting away, invest.
72 hour water fasting once a month saves you 3 days worth of food with multiple health benefits.
Never eat out, bring food with you if you are out the house for some time.
Sell what you don't use.
A lot of the time just using the cheaper base chemicals (White vinegar, isopropanol, etc) are better or just as good as the branded products (Window cleaner, disinfectant, etc).
Take free stuff where possible, even sauce packets or sugar, they add up over time.

Burn trash. Pay a family member a small amount to dispose metal/glass.
Shave your head/ learn to cut hair/ just grow it out.
A $150 phone is good enough these days.
Dedicated budgeting for abnormal expenses which can be reasonably expected (ex: car repair/replace, health problems).
Oats, potatoes, eggs, milk, rice, pasta. All pretty cheap in burgerland.
Limit snacking. Try one snack/day to start. Good for health and saving.
Drink water and cheap beverages. Brew your own tea and coffee.
If you're spending more than $20/month on online subscriptions (amazon, spotify, hulu, etc), stop. Chances are that it's a waste. Consider the annual expense.
Maximize efficiency in getting fun for cheap from your hobbies.

Not a hack but have worthwhile and inexpensive passions and hobbies that take up all your time and are productive. I started doing martial arts ten years ago and now people give me money to teach them. Don't own a school or anything, just have my own equipment, and I teach after work to make a couple extra grand a year. I was doing that before for fun, just now I get paid to do it. Mainly though, having passions is what makes your life enjoyable and fulfilled, which means you won't fill it up with stuff that costs lots of money and doesn't make you feel fulfilled anyway. Rich people often take up expensive hobbies, not because they actually like them, but just because they want to spend their money.

Also, going to train and hang out with the bros on a Friday or Saturday night means I'm not out getting drunk and buying rounds for literally everyone by the end of the night. Stuff like that.
