Calls are good when a stock goes up. If your contract says you can buy at $10 and the stock goes to $12, you have a free $2 per share. A put is the opposite. It's for you to sell a share at a strike. You want the price to go down. Then you have volatility. Volatility is the expectation that a stock price will move in ANY given direction. If volatility is low, the prices are expected to stay pretty much the same. You might pay $0.20 for that contract and suddenly the surprise 20% movement gives you a 900% return.
