Basically, when you short a stock you're borrowing a stock and selling it in advance with the promise that you will buy it back later.
This means you borrow and sell stocks for $10 today, and then one week later when it's $5 you buy back the same number of shares and you made a profit.
Hedge funds do this when they think a stock will plummet in the future.
But this entails INFINITE risk because there is no guarantee what the price will be later. If I short a stock for $10 thinking it's going to $5 next week, it could instead go up to $20 and I made a 200% loss. Or it could be $40. Or it could be $9999999999. Whatever it is, I'm FORCED to buy it back at that price. That's why shorting is dangerous because it's literally infinite risk.
