You can set them to automatically sell at a certain price for both above and below your initial buy in. As for how long people stay in that varies a lot, some people are just looking to make quick money but people using other safer leverage options like 3x can stay in for a long time. You're right about only liquidations closing automatically
If we take 10x leverage as an example its easy to think about it this way: Any profit from your initial investment is yours to keep and its just like holding normal bitcoin. However if the price falls below 90% of your initial investment you're left with nothing
