Why does everyone wants to study in another city?

For example, my gf wants to study very far away from our city, and she doesn't even know what to study, like she wants to either study criminology, law, law enforcement, or Chinese...

There's a university 2km away from my home, where I can study business management for free and live with my parents for free. Why shouldn't I just do my bachelors in my city.

that's what i did, was pretty comfy

took a bus to/from campus (free rides with student ID)

didn't have to spend a dime on room/board and got to stay in my comfy, familiar environment

also qualified for nearly full-ride scholarships/grants so I was able to reinvest my college fund into crypto + stonks
