how is having a car payment a bad thing? I bought a car a few years ago with a 0.49% interest rate. Basically free money. You're way better off making small monthly payments and putting the money into the stock market or bitcoin or something. Buying in cash comes with a huge opportunity cost. Interest rates are still very low. with good credit you can find a rate under 2%

>colleague calls me an idiot, "buying a new car is the worst financial decision you can make!"
>buy car
>decide I don't want my smelly colleague in my brand new car and stop carpooling
>his car breaks down completely
>he buy another shitty used car
>his car broke down so often that he got fired from work due to high absentee ratio
if my new car breaks down all I do is push a button and they come fix it, give me a temporary replacement car and compensate me for lost time at work
my former colleague has spent tens of thousands of dollars on old used up cars and repair bills - I've spent in total $4 200 on my car and I can return it whenever I want, interest rate is 2.8% (inflation is 12%)

not buying new cars is what they tell poor people to keep them poor, just like they tell them to save in fiat and buy retarded bonds
meanwhile the wealthy are borrowing and leveraging themselves to the tits to buy expensive cars, homes, stocks, crypto and gold
they know fiat is going into the shitter and any interest rate they have to pay is less than the price inflation of whatever they buy
everyone is trying to be the new Inflation King

Buying a car when you don’t need one. For some reason it’s tied to social status, you’re a poorfag if you don’t have a car. To me it’s the biggest one because between the principle, gas, maintenance, and insurance, you’re burning through a shit ton of money just owning a vehicle. And that’s not considering if they took out a loan or financed it or some shit like that.

Well, it's true that if you get a 2010 camry you can get get it for like 250-200 usd a month, with 100-150 a month in insurance and that's not the worst thing in the world.
The problem is that ones income becomes tied up in that car payment, so you have less leverage for loans for things that will actually produce money.
Not a big deal for guys making more than 3k a month though.

I think it's safe to say that the decision to buy a car or not, and to buy a used car or a new car, depends very much on individual circumstances. Some people absolutely need the reliability of a new car with a warranty and free rental services when it breaks down (which raises the question to me why you don't then just live within walking distance of everything you need, but that's a separate issue). Some people will get a used car and fuck everything up because they don't know how to deal with minor issues, or let minor issues become big issues. Some people buy way more car than they need (I see this most often with junior enlisted in the military who get absolutely raped by car salesmen).

>growing up in california
>dad gets me a shitbox out of his drinking buddy's back yard
>drive that bitch all over socal, learning to fix problems as they come up
>go to college
>everything is walking distance and I don't use it that much and parking costs money, so I give it back to my dad in roughly the same condition I got it (actually better since it needed a new alternator)
>dad gives it to my brother
>brother wrecks it driving like a tard within a few months (no accidents, he just was to rough with it and the engine gave out)
>I then arrange my life to live within walking distance of everything I need for the next few years
>join military
>get cheapest apartment in town walking distance from work
>just rent when I absolutely need to drive somewhere, everything is walk bike or bus for me
(side story I actually got out of an accusation of drunk driving by an idiot asshole because I don't even own a car, shit was very lucky for me)
>getting time to transfer
>buy a used car, good condition, to take advantage of transfer moving benefits
>paid a friend cash
>keep it maintained and drive it carefully so it's staying good
>still walk bike and bus everywhere I can
I saved thousands and thousands of dollars.

I work at a bank and have to review customer account activity as part of my daily responsibilities. It never ceases to amaze me how terrible 90% of people really are with their money, I would say most people literally live paycheck to paycheck constantly dodging debt collectors and don't invest anything at all. Poor people but also rich people too.
Poor people have constant debit card activity, always eating shit like Little Caesars, Mcdonalds. There's a funny phenomenon where we always get really busy over the summer starting in May and June... because poor people withhold too much in taxes and the moment they get their refund they're blowing it all on stupid shit like new cars and Prada Gucci Le Nignog whatever.
Rich people usually use credit so I can't view their transactions directly, but you'll see them paying thousands every month in multiple credit card payments. They're also more into expensive property remodeling and buying fuck ugly houses.
What really blows my mind are seeing people with mid six figure salaries going on vacation two or three times a year and literally blowing every. single. cent. on gambling, food, designer clothing, hotels, what have you. People who get a million dollar settlement from an injury lawsuit or an inheritance and then spending tens of thousands of dollars at... Walmart. Or TJ Maxx, or Ross. Who the fuck does that?
And plenty of customers have massive piles of money sitting in their checking account just doing nothing.
If you know anything at all about investing, stocks, hell even cryptocurrency and are actually putting your money to work, you are ahead of 90% of the population. Trust me.

There's so many people who take cash out of their accounts literally to keep under their mattress at home. Or people who buy large cashier's checks made to themselves, then put it in their safe deposit box or keep it somewhere "safe".
We have a few Native American customers who get a fuckton of money from the US Govt. payments for mineral/oil rights or something like that. They take literally all of it out every single month and drink it all away. Or give their debit card to their relatives and then let them take all their money. ALL the Injuns we bank are like this.
It's always the rich people who seem to have the most money going towards collections, endless credit card payments. People will take out new mortgages or open a LOC on their house to blow on stupid shit all the time.
Even the successful businesses and investors we have are always riding the edge of insolvency. They either put all their money back into their business or they are always on the razor's edge of profitability, which usually means just being able to service their outstanding debt.

And they're constantly 99% utilized, i.e. all the payments they make are constantly being taken out again just to keep their business afloat.
Lots of our small businesses are like this too, just barely staying solvent.
We really have not seen the worst of the covid shutdowns yet.

This. I used to work in cafes and lots of my coworkers would literally spend over $10 on food from the cafe to have in their break. So not only are they not getting paid for that half hour, but they are giving an hour's wages back to the company, so effectively the first hour and a half of work is to pay for a lunch they wouldn't need if they weren't at work... I stole the food lol.

Also people eating out in general is an expense that even poor people don't seen to realise they could save thousands a year on if they cooked.

Still food related, people buying branded boxes of food instead of just getting the ingredients. Like a box of granola bars, a box of microwaveable bacon, a box of potato salad. The markup on these things is incredible and you can just make it yourself in 5 minutes from raw/fresh ingredients.

Peope look getting vehicles on finance is another one. Just get a shitty car you can afford to buy outright. Normies genuinely dont understand how interest fucks you up the ass.

Maybe I came across as really harsh, sorry. I'm trying to say that I've done most of the "bad decisions" in this thread and I still probably accumulated more wealth than most here. My point is that instead of focusing on saving $25 each day or whatever, focus on increasing your income. I think the whole emphasis on saving that people do (even very rich people like Kevin O'Leary) is mostly horseshit. Nobody is saying to go out and blow your life savings in a week but I see people here who refuse to buy something pointless like fast food so tbey can save a few hundred bucks per month, as if that will make a difference long term, but don't put in the effort to increase their income by that nuch or nore every month.

You're right. To become rich (also known as getting paid a lot more than the average joe) you have to become more valuable to the marketplace. It doesn't matter how you spend or if you try to "save" money. Instead of focusing how to save money (remember: USD loses value generally) it would be smarter for these people to change their spending habits to a pattern where they buy things which hold their value (even collecting video games and holding them is very profitable) like commodities, real estate etc. I always use the phrase "Having something to show for the money you spent"

I live in Munich. A shitty apartment will cost you 800k+ EUR, plus another 100k+ EUR in closing costs. If you're lucky and have an older rent contract, you'll pay less than 1k EUR/month to rent a comparable apartment. Renting here is financially a much better choice (unless you bought 10 years ago, then you're far ahead, but hindsight is 20/20).

I suck at /biz/, just a tourist, but I love my cars so I'll help you out

Buy a mechanic friend for a couple hundred dollars

Go on yelp and look up mechanical inspection or something to that effect once you narrow down a car you want to buy and find a good example and communicate with the owner.
Don't buy eurocrap, it's expensive.
Buy a known reliable Japanese car. Lexus/Toyota is very reliable. So is Honda/Acura. Parts are plentiful and relatively cheap. Figure out the kind of car you want. You most likely don't need a heug SUV or pick up truck to say otherwise is usually a cope. Buy a small commuter car so figure out if you want a coupe or sedan. Since you don't have any friends, a smaller coupe probably makes more sense. Just look around, do your research, find out what kind of gas you'll use. 87 or do you need 91? An economy car probably will run 87, but consider your comfort too. A still relatively cheap luxury car (Lexus, or Acura) will have a few more creature comforts and will have a smoother, quieter, softer ride. So its a trade off. MPGs? Looks? Just really narrow down what you want. Once you know or have an idea, go on facebook and find groups for the particular car you want. Do some research, figure out common issues to look out for by literally searching 'common issues' in the group and how expensive they are to fix, if they're reliable or not, high mileage examples. Just do your homework and learn. Once you're ready with a car or a few in mind, go on market place, look for low mileage examples. One owner cars if possible. A few owners isn't too bad for an older car, but 1 owner, low mileage, boomer owned are holy grails. Take a walk and maybe find some for sale in your own block, or keep an eye out when you drive. Might find something. Autotrader is a good website for cars too. Once you find some good cars, message the owner, call them. Whatever. Get some info. Why they're selling. Ask if its okay to get someone to look at the car.

Fellow bankfag here. Can confirm most people are pants on head retarded with their money. Never seen someone take out a cashiers check in their own name to store in a safe though, that's probably the dumbest fucking thing I've ever heard in my life. I process personal loans along with debt consolidation, auto, RV, and boat loans. This was our biggest year ever for RV and boat apps. There are tons of boomers out there along with some younger try-hards that are getting fucking TEN or FIFTEEN year notes on boats that are already over ten years old. I shit you not. Literally did a boat loan for some twenty something thot who was trying to keep up with the joneses and got a boat before getting a home. Lives with relatives, finances a boat. Can't make this shit up. Keep in mind, you're making the boat loan payments and insurance payments year round even though it's only warm enough to enjoy it 5 months of the year (midwest USA). Not to mention maintenance, registration, fuel, docking fees, etc. Biggest money pit of all time.

Also the high earners with huge debt is a thing too. Gotta have that conspicuous consumption habit. I've done loans for people that have consolidated between $20k and $35k in credit card debt. I've seen $700+ monthly payments on 84 month car loans, the works. So many apps we process are right on the debt to income ratio limit. In other words, we determine the borrower will be able to barely afford the payment along with their other debts, relative to the income they have coming in. Paycheck to paycheck basically. And people will get salty that you won't lend more. They beg to bury themselves in debt in order to CONSOOM a little bit more.

Third and final thing to mention is that it's unbelievable how many old people and boomers have social security as their only income source. Tons of people out there surviving on $1000-$1800 a month net. Don't be one of them. Invest for the long term.

Heh. Reminds me of my banking days and the worst personal finance fuckup I ever saw. I was a platform banker. So, to answer the thread question, it was having kids at the wrong time with the wrong person(s).
This guy was negative $1.5 million in his account. You probably caught on already.
Yup he didn't wear a rubber or the pull out game was weak or whatever happened to give him the gift of child support multiple times over. And he never paid any of it. Government comes in and requires us to adjust the balance that way hoping to get his income. And it just keeps getting deeper and deeper. He worked fast food and would cash the checks, lived that way, only had the account to cash checks cheaper than the cashing shops.
Living paycheck to paycheck is a total reality for this dude. Forget investing. He can never save anything, except under the mattress, or it's gone to that seven figure void. Effectively ruined his entire financial picture.

My friend is like "I'm worried about getting bitch tits from plastic contamination" and I'm like "Dude what about the microplastics in your water cooler, also you have bitch tits because you drink like 4 beers a day...". Like, if you're worried about tap water contamination just do the math and buy a home water filter. Way cheaper. I only have to pay $30 a year to replace my filter. I don't have all the numbers and reports because I'm not a manager, but just from the volume of applications I personally dealt with, overall I'd say there wasn't much of a drop from last year. Plenty of car loans. The surge in boat and RV loans was due to the shutdowns putting the kibosh on travel and other activities so people with disposable income had to make their own fun boating and glamping. Plenty of people taking out personal loans to pay for stupid shit or shit they need but don't have savings to pay for because they live paycheck to paycheck.

>Move to Europe where you can take a bicycle or bus to get to work

I actually did this in USA. My roundtrip commute was 16 miles. My cash savings were as impressive as my levels of fitness. When it rained I took the bus which was 1 mile away. Amerifats just don't try, they want life on easy mode 24/7. That route included killer hills both directions. The route allowed me to hop off, enjoy coffee, socialize, run errands, buy food, listen to podcasts, etc. There was a shower at work, if I needed it, which most of the time I didn't because my health level (possibly a mostly veg diet as well) meant I didn't stink. After work I'd run, hit the gym, take a sauna. The gym was another mile the other direction. Best time of my life was during this era. Full time work, best health ever. Saved a fuck load of money. Only late once due to a flat tire (which I fixed in 10 minutes). Cars are not just a money trap, but a life trap and a soul trap.

The only downside risk is that, yes, you have to ride in traffic, among assholes, but that means you ride strategically, on side streets, adjust how you ride in inclement weather and conditions, etc.

Well, different people have different strengths. People say I am a good listener and good at humor. Being good at listening is something most people can do with a little effort, and most people secretly really need a confidant they can share their fears and insecurities with, then you just praise and reassure them. People will also be flattered if they notice that you remember small details about what they tell you, because it makes them feel interesting. This is all obviously easier to do if you genuinely like the person. Also, people often like when you ask them for advice every once in a while, because it makes them feel smart and useful, especially in an area they are good at but don't usually get asked about. Random (sincere) compliments are also good, especially on taste or intelligence/judgment.

>Buy a mechanic friend for a couple hundred dollars

Lel. Mechanics is a bitch, let me tell you. Cars are fuggin' complicated. That mechanic is going to look at your 20 year old valuemobile and grin ear to ear because you are going to be a repeat customer. There is no such thing as a cheap mechanic, you get what you pay for. Pay a little, you end up paying 4 hours vs. 1 hour for someone who knows what they're doing- and good luck finding the in-demand skilled mechanic that can fit you in. Pay a little, and that oil plug nut they over-torqued splits the gasket when you're running flat-out on the freeway, and you lose pressure and now you're into towing, and engine overhaul. Good Mechanics are in high demand most of the time, so a shop near you might have a bunch of seriously inexperienced people with too many cars to work on. A car in running condition is a complex thing and there are literally so many ways you can unbalance it. They are money pits. They are a false dream of mobility and convenience. This hallucination of power & control is so strong that it will drive you to make many mistakes in life, like thinking you can move 30 miles away from your job and it will be no problem because you have heated seats. Stop! This is female-tier thinking.

The commute by car was 20 minutes, by bike it was 45. Thats one podcast, give or take. So I got loads of aerobic exercise and expanded my mind listening to this generation's best and brightest, & like I said, best time of my life. I will also admit that, at the time I had a car and could have driven (cheated once or twice I admit). Cagers ARE trapped. They don't know it though. Life for a cager is living in a fantasy of the open road when in reality its tomb with their bodies and souls sealed inside. The landscape they transit is actually series of tubes that connect small areas. Their sensations and state of mind are numbed into senescence. They emerge from the car WEAKER every time. Fuck, just look at people get out of their cars at the grocery store parking lot. Its like watching crippled people, the way they are so unsteady.

>>25329121
I used to be a cager. I used to maintain my own cars. I've done the economics of cost/mile. Its a trap. A fantasy. A complete waste of life. As for missing the bus, when missing it is not an option, the bus is never missed. Everything else is excuses.

Rode that bike into the ground, guess what, took it to the bike shop, an entire overhaul of the drivetrain was under $300 bucks, gtg for another 50-10 years.

>You are right on how obnoxious they are though, I think all the endorphins give them a superiority complex.

It is that, too. An earned sense of self-esteem is commonly recognized by others as a superiority complex. More accurately, and harder to admit, is their literal and actual superiority.

Bikers have "skin in the game". They're keyed up, ready to explode, hyper-aware. The dim-witted somnolence of the cager is in stark contrast. Every single day I'm risking my life, and building hardened muscular and sweat equity, while they're literally draining energy and money from theirs. They're cunts. I'm just going to say that, generically, for everyone out there reading. You're a cunt unless you are physically handicapped. And trust me, physically handicapped is where cagers are heading.

That's why you find someone trust worthy, if your car breaks after they're supposed to fix something simple then you give them shit, get your money back, fuck if I know. Never happened to me. A few hundred for a couple hours of their time isn't bad for an independent mechanic. There's plenty of decent mechanics that will check out your car for you, its a lot easier to earn money telling you what's wrong with your car rather than fixing something, especially doing a full engine overhaul. Trust me, mechanics don't exactly enjoy busting their knuckles.

Cars are valuable if you don't enjoy wasting your time. Riding bikes is for cucks. Depending on where you live, cars are basically a necessity to get around. There's no false dream of mobility or convenience. You can go anywhere you want. Whether or not you do, is up to you. I've gone on long road trips in my car that I wouldn't be able to do otherwise. AC is convenient. Heat is convenient. Not waiting on a BUS in the cold/rain or in the blistering sun and just being able to go wherever you wish is convenient. I know, because I've had to get around without a car before. It sucks.

>>25329654
>Cager
I don't know why I'm bothering, but I'll bite. You can listen to podcasts while you drive too, you dink. And not sacrifice the much needed attention/situation awareness you desperately need while riding a bike to not get creamed on the road that you partly get rid of with earbuds in your head.
I've never missed the bus. But I was always aware of the consequences if I made a mistake, or more likely, the buses didn't run on time or something happened out of my control that would effect my planned public transport trip. Being at the mercy of others and relying on anyone except yourself to commute is something adults are not interested in. I used to ride a bike too. Sometimes for fun, sometimes for commuting. Its fun. It can be better to bike sometimes, but if you write off cars completely, its pants on head retarded

And guess what else is coming cagers? Taxes and penalties. Penalties for the pollution you guys create every day. Social penalties for people who are going to cut you out of their lives and opportunities because you won't stop your habit. You are going to pay, pay, pay. For the poison coming out of your tires. For the blood that was spilled for your gas. To the insurance, to the mechanic. And the physical and psychological fees.

Maybe one day you can be this based. Maybe you'll be one of those cunts driving around with the bike on the back (my favorite) like a complete idiot. Maybe you can huff and puff your fat ass until you lose 20 pounds. Oh yeah. You and sweating and swerving to avoid near misses with cars, getting rained on, shouted at, stuff thrown at you. You too can earn a superiority complex. It won't be easy, but nothing of value is easy or easily bought.
