Senator Cynthia Lummis from Wyoming just tweeted:

Been doing work on the rumored transaction reporting rule impacting digital assets (currently being contemplated by Treasury) and wanted to share with you where I am.

I am deeply concerned that the Treasury Department is considering a hasty rule governing self-hosted digital asset wallets and the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA). Rather than prematurely adopting a rule on this complex topic, Treasury should immediately begin a transparent process to engage with Congress and industry, building a consensus to drive America forward.

America is in a battle for competitiveness with China and Russia for the future of finance. Without broad consensus, a rule would be a step backward at the moment our country is beginning to realize the transformative effects of digital assets and financial technology. I spoke with Secretary Mnuchin last week and strongly pressed him for a better path forward. Congress is best placed to weigh the competing policy issues at stake. A rule adopted now could also potentially extend the BSA to new types of transactions beyond Congress’ intent.

Treasury's rule would also likely be adopted without public comment under an often-abused portion of the Administrative Procedure Act. Transparency makes good policy. It’s really that simple. Let the sunshine in, Mr. Secretary. A hallmark feature of digital assets, like BTC is the ability to conduct transactions w/out an intermediary. This promotes financial inclusion and freedom. A rule adopted at this juncture would be a solution in search of a problem. More pressing BSA-related issues exist.

requiring banks and MSBs to keep records and verify the identity of their hosted wallet
customers, when those customers engage in transactions with unhosted or otherwise covered
wallets with a value of more than $3,000.

basically if you send or receive >= $3000 to a non-exchange wallet, the exchange is required to keep a record of it and also verify your identity? Don't they already do this? Coinbase, Gemini, and other legit exchanges already require KYC, and also monitor where you send the coins after you send to your wallet. Sounds like nothing much would change. In any case, it's the exchanges who'd have to do the recordkeeping not you the user.

Regulations are good for crypto. Normies are not going to adopt the technology unless the government gives it the green light. In the US most exchanges already do KYC when you sign up, so who cares?

the stable act is totally unrelated to this FinCEN rule change, and is about requiring issuers of stable coins to get a banking charter and other regulations. at this point is only a proposed bill by some extreme lefty hysterical congresswoman on her period, which will probably never become law. in any case has nothing to do with bitcoin but only stablecoins, so is pretty much irrelevant.

It says that verbatim in the bill. The bill says nothing about making all digital coins stable in price..As for your other two statements, this bill has nothing to do with centralization of other currencies, it only is meant to weaken the strength of Tether which the US government doesn't like...

yeah but everyone in crypto (other than usdt or dai or stablecoins) knows that BTC will not be 20k forever, it could go to 10k, or even 5k, we don't hold to ALWAYS equal 20k. Whereas USDT and stablecoins GUARANTEE $1 .

Yeah I saw this link as well. I'm not sure if a random lawyer / legal group located in Ft Lauderdale FL (Boomer-ville) opinion piece is considered a credible source.

With that being said there is some valid statements in the link. In short, it's a nothing burger (another anon already dived into this one above). It's tying AML laws into Crypto. This was bound to happen once crypto started becoming mainstream. I don't know why everyone is freaking out. The dollars that you currently have in your pocket have the same amount of regulations (I'd argue more), but yet you use those every single day without questioning them. How is this any different? Do you not want to be able to use your crypto for day to day purchases in the future?

the conflicting verbature is just another reason why this bill may not even pass in its current state

This is why you use stop loss features in order to prevent losing money. Do you not know how to play the financial game?

Further to unpack this statement, the two main core reasons why you are freaking out are probably the following:

1. You are afraid crypto is going to stabilize thus removing your chances of "making it".

- This immediately tells me that you are lacking basic financial knowledge to the point that assuming you were to make it, you'd end up losing all of your money anyway because you do not know how laws work in America (Seems like you're an american citzen).

2. You do not seem to grasp that crypto is a global market and country rules have a micro impact on Crypto. Whatever laws the US passes has 0 impact on other users of crypto located outside of the US. Crypto is not going to tank just because one country refuses to use it / hamstrings it internally while the rest of the world adopts it.

Blockchain is an enslavement mechanism, but you will need zoom out to see that, it will completely erode anonymity. There is no such thing as a free lunch, if you have made money off of crypto it's because the greatest wealth transfer in the history of mankind was always going to leave some crumbs.

Of course it is. The block is the financial system that controls us and the chain is the tethers that lock us in. This entire year was one great wealth transfer. I bought energy stocks focused in the oil sector back when everything tanked in March. All of my friends laughed at me and sent me reddit style memes of oil being less than $1.. Oil is now back to $50 a barrel. All of them are quiet now and are trying to memory hole the discussions of them giving me shit about oil. I told them to invest in energy because its going to continue to be the next big thing. I cannot wait to drop my post covid bags on them for talking shit.

Fuck everyone - either you win or you lose.

Look guys, it's the new new newer newest, "china bans Bitcoin" fud except now the US gov is going to effectively do it by somehow magically converting Bitcoin (a global money system) into a stablecoin?

Please elaborate on exactly how this would be achieved, genius.
